Wisdom Wednesday: Cash Bar or Open Bar?
🥃 Now, we know the idea of recouping some of the (VERY) high cost of planning a wedding can seem appealing, but… here's the tea: Selling alcohol at your event is ILLEGAL.
Unless... you own a brick and mortar bar / restaurant with a liquor license AND off premise catering license OR you are a catering company with a full-time, commercial, exclusive use kitchen AND liquor license.
So, in short, it's pretty much illegal.
🥃 This is because the Bible belt highly regulates anything alcohol related, PLUS the state of Tennessee operates under the Dram Shop Law, which states that three parties are liable if any incident, accident, or heaven forbid, death occurs…
The venue, the bartender, and YOU. That's right… YOU.
The host and person who provides the alcohol can be sued if anything goes wrong. This is one of the reasons why it’s EXTREMELY important to hire a bartender that has their sh*t together.
That means finding a person who keeps the proper insurance policies, understands those pesky state laws, and knows how to responsibly serve you and your guests…
🥃 That being said… Can your friend Tina who works at O'Charley's bartend your wedding for cheaper? Totally.
Does she know the logistics of planning an event bar AND carry the insurance that Call The Shots does? We’re gonna guess not.
Is Tina your friend and therefore less likely to cut people off who are having a REALLY good time? Maybe so.
Are you then exposed to more liability? YEP.
