But when you bring someone (like this amazing family right here) to your special place, your heart gets a little fuller watching their excitement grow. For anyone who knows me, I am a huge animal lover. If I had farm I would literally pick up any stray (cat,dog,bird,tortoise all the species) and give them a loving home.
So when my families bring their fur babies to our photo shoots I get overly excited and end up playing with the animals instead 😅

The holiday vibe in the atmosphere has me itching to travel. With so much going on this year, jumping on a plane in a heartbeat has been pretty much non-existent. But then I get to look back at portraits like these and soak in the feels all over again. Big Island- I will see you soon one day.

Back in May, I did some volunteer work for Hale Na'au Pono. This non-profit mental health center serves the Waianae community and provides housing across the island of O'ahu. Many of the adults who live in these transitional homes suffer from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and ADHD.

I was contacted by Josiah Vemli Koria through a mutual friend in hopes of making these special birthday portraits for the patients. I didn't hesitate to offer my services.

This project really hit close to home as my uncle (Dad's brother) has suffered from schizophrenia since he was a teenager. Come to find out, the last place we photographed happened to be the home where my uncle lived for over a year. Talk about a full circle.

Mental illness is a serious and on-going issue that needs continued support both within home and community.

If you know someone who is struggling:
Let them share as much or as little as they want to
Don't try to diagnose or second guess their feelings
Listen carefully to what they tell you
Love unconditionally
