🚒🚓🥁 PARADE ALERT 6/17/23 🗣️

COURTESY OF HILLY MUNSON (copied from his post - Thanks Hilly):

The Town of South Kingstown to Celebrate 300th Anniversary with Parade, Picnic and Baseball Game

A synchronized chorus of bells will ring across the community at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, to kick off a parade in celebration of the Town of South Kingstown’s 300th birthday. Bells from the Church of the Ascension, First Church of God Peace Dale, Peace Dale Congregation, St. Francis Church, Wakefield Baptist Church, and the Town Hall will all ring from 10:00 a.m. to 10:03 a.m. – one minute per century - to mark the start of the parade.

The 1.3-mile-long parade steps off from the intersection of School and Holley Streets, behind Old Mountain Lanes, and will continue through the heart of downtown Wakefield, ending at South Kingstown Town Hall, 180 High Street. The University of Rhode Island is the sponsor for the parade – the largest event of the South Kingstown’s 300th anniversary celebration. President Parlange, his wife Mary, URI administration, faculty, staff, students, and alumni will be marching alongside a 21ft URI float, donated by Northup’s Service Center.

The parade is a microcosm of the town’s anniversary celebration including businesses, faith-based, non-profit, and civic organizations, students from public and private schools, elected officials, and military, fire, police, and town personnel. There are over 130 units in the parade,” said Hilly Munson, 300th Committee member. “There will be representations from all South Kingstown fire departments, as well as Narragansett. Over 50 floats and bands will process with close to 2000 participants.”

A Review Stand for dignitaries, sponsors, and other special guests to watch the parade will be located at 50 High Street – at Pier Cleaners - towards the end of the parade. Steve Stewart, a committee member who has led the Memorial Day and Veterans Day Parades for the last 30 years will be one of the guests. “Steve has given so much of his time and energy to the community that the 300th Anniversary Committee insisted he be a guest,” said Terry Murphy, 300th Committee member, and director of SK’s Leisure Services. “But - because it’s his nature to help, Steve will first lineup participants and then bike it over to the review stand.”

The parade will include a variety of floats and bands including Broad Rock and Curtis Corner Middle School Bands, 88th Army Band, Ancient Mariners Fife and Drum Corps, Kentish Guard, Pawtuxet Rangers, Portuguese Independent Band, Spartans, and many more said Beth Leconte, 300th Committee Member who organized the line up with Steve Stewart and Mark Phillips, after the units were confirmed by Hilly Munson and Sean Seigel. There will be NO PARKING on Main Street before and during the parade. Shuttle buses will loop from Columbia Street to Town Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accommodate parade participants, watchers, and picnic attendees.

For more information on road closures and shuttle buses, please visit the town’s website.

The anniversary celebration continues after the parade with the Parade Picnic at the Saugatucket Veterans Park on High Street from 12-4:30 p.m. sponsored by Advanced Auto Body. Food is available in the park through local food trucks and restaurants, as well as local beer, wines, and soft drinks.

Entry to the event is free. Beer/wine/soft drinks tickets are available at the 300th beer tent, with credit cards and cash accepted.

The picnic includes live musical performances starting with local favorites The Naticks and finishing with the US Navy's Rock Band, "Rhode Island Sound”, stationed in Newport.

Entertainers roaming through the park interacting with guests include Big Nazo puppets, Rhode Island Bucket Drummer, Ladies of the Rolling Pin, costumed characters from Paw Patrol, and more!

“The 300th Parade picnic is planned to be a fun, family event for the community in the Park,” said Kenny Burke, 300th Committee member and picnic organizer. “This event and the parade would not have been possible without the full support of the community.”

“Philip Telford is also on the 300th Committee and he’s recruited his fellow pickleball and softball players and Friends of Special Olympics to help with the picnic. He is a volunteer extraordinaire,” said Burke.

The day will end with a free baseball game at Old Mountain Field. Ocean State Waves, a member of the New England College Baseball League, will play against the Newport Gulls at 6:30 p.m. Members of the anniversary committee will throw out the first pitch. “The Waves are pleased to partner with the SK 300th Anniversary Committee,” said Eric Hirschbein-Bodnar, President and General Manager. “The team will march behind the South Kingstown Little League in the parade, and then offer a great night of baseball for the community,” We hope many families will come out and cheer on the Waves.”
