!! We just wanted to share our adoption information with everyone! if you have any questions feel free to contact us thank you! :) !!
Adoption Policy for the Huron Co Dog Warden Shelter:
All adoption are FINAL. All dogs that are not redeemed by an owner within 72 hours (3 business days) of being in the shelter will be put up for adoption if the dog is suitable to be adopted. Adoptions are $63.75 (includes the yearly county tag) unless marked down by the shelter due to over crowding or due to the dog being in the shelter for more than a few weeks. All dogs who enter our shelter are STRAY DOGS! We do not know any past medical history or behavior issues of the dog this is a risk that the adopter takes with adopting a stray dog. All dogs are adopted out as is and are not vet check unless the dog enters the shelter with a serious health condition. All vet check and spay/neuter will be at the adopter’s expenses and time. No adopted dogs will return to the shelter unless the dog is diagnosed with parvo within 72 hours (of being adopted) by a licensed vet. If the dog does not work out within your household it will be the adopters responsibility to rehome the adopted dog. This is due to the stray population that comes into the shelter.
Adoption Applications:
Adoptions are NOT a first come first serve basis. All adoptions are based on adoption applications that are made in person through our shelter. We do not offer online applications unless you live more than 1 hour from the shelter or discussed differently by a staff member. Applications cost $0.00 to fill out and takes roughly 10 minutes to complete. Applications are just a question sheet we like to keep handy when choosing the right home for the dog of interest. Applications are reviewed in order as handed in. This does NOT mean you will be first to get the dog if you’re the first person to hand in an application. All applications are checked and discussed by our 3 staff members to find the right fitted home for the dog. If multiple good homes are available for the dog of interest a name drawing may take place to keep the adoption fair. If you do not get the chance to adopt the dog of interest this DOES NOT mean you got denied an adoption, just means the dog had tons of applications and the applications had to be examined more intense. Remember we have 1 dog and multiple homes we wish we could provide all homes with the dog of interested but unfortunately 1 dog needs 1 home. All applications are filed and later shredded meaning if you haven’t turned in an adoption application within a month, we recommend you to come back into the shelter to fill out another application just in case yours is no longer on file. WE DO HAVE A RIGHT TO DENY AN ADOPTION! If we simply do not think you can care for the dog of interest due to health or living situations, we do have a right to deny an adoption.
Denied adoptions:
If you are convicted with any Animal Cruelty or neglect cases on any animal (not just dogs) you will be denied an adoption from the HCDW
If you have unregistered dogs at home, you will be advised to purchase dog tags for your dogs at home or your adoption will be denied. (Registering your dog is a state law! Non registered dogs can/will lead to citations or a written warning.) You can purchase dog tags through our shelter or online at the Huron Co Auditors Webpage.
Any person who has violated the Ohio Revise Code 955 DOGS within the last three years from date of adoption will be denied an adoption.
Any person that has been convicted of felony violence or narcotics. (See Ohio Revised Code 955.54 Possession of certain dogs by convicted felons prohibited, for more information and updates.)
A person, firm, brokerage, or agency directly engaged in animal research.
Adopter MUST be 18 years or older with a valid ID. Please bring your ID with you at the time of adoption.
WE DO HAVE A RIGHT TO DENY ANY ADOPTION TO ANY PERSON.
The HCDW Shelter is not responsible for:
-Any damaged household items that the adopted dog might have destroyed with in the new home.
-Any animal incidents that happen at home involving the adopted dog
-Any health issues the dog may have
-Any incidents that happen after adoption that involves the adopted dog
Once the dog is adopted from the shelter the adopter takes full responsibility of the adopted dog.
PLEASE REMEMBER! These are STRAY DOGS. What we know about these dogs are what we personally experience from the dog while in our care. We do not know how the dog acts in a home or around other animals due to the dog being a stray. We do not have access to health records, or past incidents (if any) that involved the dog of interest. We simply don’t know much about the stray dogs in our shelter, BUT stray dogs can and do make wonderful pets! They might need more time and love, but they do tend to settle in wonderful with their new family! We do highly recommend dog to dog meet and greets or cat to dog meet and greet at the shelter before adopting the dog. To make sure all animals in the household will get along. We also highly recommend the dog meet everyone in the household before adoption to make sure the dog gets along well with all persons in the household. If adopter fails to do meet and greets and the dog doesn’t fit well within the home the dog will need rehomed by the adopter and will not return to the shelter due to adopter error.
The Huron County Dog Warden Shelter is for STRAY DOGS ONLY! We do not accept owner surrenders. Owner surrenders should be discussed with your local Humane Society or a local rescue! This shelter is strictly for the stray population in Huron Co to help reunite lost dogs and to get the dog back home! If you are found to claim your personally owned dog as a stray dog for the dog to be in pounded this can lead to legal issues due to false information.
