DAMN HAS IT BEEN COLD 🥶
I keep reminding myself that it won't be winter forever and that spring is just a couple of months away. Before I know it, I'll be planting and w**ding away... Until then, I'll have to push through these cold months and distract myself with dried flowers and seed starting, as well as some upcoming indoor events.

I've got a couple of shadowboxes done and have been working on some mini bouquets on the frame backs.
I've been playing with different colors for the background on the frame backs. I've done a couple in bubble gum pink and a couple in cream.

I'm so excited to share something new I've been working on 🤩
So, nothing goes to waste around here. I had a whole stack of frame backs sitting around from my floating flower frames creations. I knew I would use them, but I wasn't sure how at that moment. Then we had market, I saw how much you all loved the mini bouquet creations, and here we are 😍

🐝🪻BEE the Change! NEWS RELEASE from the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources: Anyone who lives in Minnesota and has an outdoor space for planting is eligible to apply for a fall 2025 Lawns to Legumes grant.

The Lawns to Legumes program aims to increase habitat for at-risk pollinators in residential settings across the state by providing reimbursement-based funding, workshops, coaching and gardening resources. People who live in Minnesota and have a yard, deck, or other outdoor space for planting can apply to be reimbursed for up to $400 in costs associated with establishing new pollinator habitat. The program is available to both Minnesota homeowners and renters.

HOW TO APPLY: Lawns to Legumes is administered by the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR) in partnership with Blue Thumb – Planting for Clean Water. Apply for Fall 2025 grants on Blue Thumb – Planting for Clean Water’s website: https://buff.ly/3AII7hC

So, I made this post a few years ago, and with the uh current climate of well, the world, I decided it was time to share it again to stress the importance of buying local flowers.
This isn't anything political, as that's not the way I run my social media. It's more of a reminder to think local and think seasonal.
I know that you can run to Costco and get a cheap, 'fresh' flower bouquet, and I get it, I'm missing my fresh blooms more than ever. But that's what makes fresh flower season so special. Nothing blooms all year long, and when those first flowers of the season come into bloom, there's a buzz of excitement in the air that we all feel.
And let's not forget about dried flowers! Dried flowers are what get me through these long, cold winter months. A lot of the flowers I grow for dried arrangements and creations retain their color and look as fresh as the day they were harvested.
If you gotta have fresh flowers, talk to your local florist to see if they can source American grown blooms. There are also flower farmers in our northern climate that force blooms like tulips and lilies throughout the winter months.

Seeds have been started 🥳
Now you might be thinking, 'Alyssa, that's six things, 2 of which aren't flowers... don't you have a 3-acre flower farm to fill???'.
I started around 1000 seeds altogether, and it's only the first week of February! This number will continue to climb as we get closer and closer to planting season, as will the varieties of blooms and plants.
First up, Yarrow 😍 if you've been following my journey for a while, you know that I am straight obsessed with yarrow. This will more than likely be my last year starting them from seed 😢. I have a few gaps that I need to fill in my 3, 50-foot beds of it, and then I won't need to start any more. I will also be potting some up for sale in the spring/early summer.
Next, we have snapdragons 🤩 This is a classic bloom that everybody loves. Now, last year, I had around 1000 snaps in the ground, and I decided that the number needed to grow to fulfill everybody's love for them. So, I've started 600 seeds 🤯, have 800 plugs on order, and I plan on starting more seeds in the next month.
Onto bunching onions. To be honest, I started them because I had a super old pack of seeds. If any germinate, I'll pot them up, and they'll be for sale this spring/early summer.
And finally, chives 🤩 While known for their edible qualities, they also make a wonderful, whimsy addition to any late spring bouquet. There are a couple of perennial flower beds from the early days of the farm that have large gaps that I would like to get filled. This will not only help with w**d pressure, but it will also give me more stems to cut for arrangements and dehydrating for my personal use. There will also be plants available for you to purchase 😀

Going through my seed supply and deciding which seeds to get started 🤗
Which ones take the longest?
Which ones am I willing to pot up a time or even two with our whack-a-doodle springs?
I also sell potted herbs in the spring and early summer. Which of those should I get started?
Which plants proved how hardy they were during my cool flowers experiment last year? Are there others that I think could handle that?
These are just some of the questions I ask myself as I go through to plan out my seed starting schedule for the year. With this year being my 5th growing season (🤯), the process is easier as what I grow has become more dialed in. However, I'm always experimenting with new to me blooms or giving blooms I had previously nixed another shot. Always growing and expanding my knowledge 🥰
