On This Day In LGBTQ History…

1980: The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence make their debut in the San Francisco’s annual Gay Freedom Day Parade. The four founding members were known as Sister Vicious Power Hungry Bitch (or, more commonly, Vicious PHB), Reverend Mother, Sister Missionary Position and Sister Hysterectoria-Agnes.

1980: Can’t Stop the Music – a sanitized film “biography” of the Village People, directed by Nancy Walker, opens nationwide. The Advocate calls it “thunderingly bad,” while The New York Times dismisses it as “mostly dead air … no spontaneity, no variety.” It includes the now infamous line, delivered by Valerie Perrine—”The 70s are dead and gone. The 80s are going to be something wonderfully new and different, and so am I.” It goes on to inspire John Wilson to create the Golden Raspberry (RAZZIE) Awards.

On This Date In LGBTQ History…

1953: President Dwight Eisenhower signs Executive Order 10450, banning homosexuals from working for the federal government or any of its private contractors. The Order lists homosexuals as security risks, along with alcoholics and neurotics.

1972: Testifying before Congress, J. Edgar Hoover assures the House Appropriations Committee that there are no gay activists in the Bureau, saying “We don’t allow any types of activists in the FBI, gay or otherwise. I ask not for average personnel but for those above average in character, education, and personal appearance.”

1994: The Interim Constitution of South Africa comes into force, including a clause explicitly prohibiting discrimination (both government and private) on the basis of sexual orientation. A subsequent court decision in 1998 will establish that the crime of so**my was legally invalid from this date.

Pride, Love, Community!

46 years... Of Family, Of Community and of Pride!
On this day, back in 1976, Jon and Steve Crovo, along with the support of their parents and family opened The Hub in Walnut Creek, California. Later, the name was changed to Club 1220. Over the years, this LGBTQ+ bar has gone thru several changes and remodels, but one constant has always been, to be a safe and supportive place for our community.
Holotta and Robert, along with the help of Vicodonia and Philip, bought the bar in 2020 to make sure Club 1220 remains part of this diverse community and carry on its legacy.
Today we celebrate the 46 Anniversary of Club 1220!

Thank you all for all your support!
