Happy Spooky Season, friends! We hope you’re all enjoying the crisp air and the promise of Halloween on its way. We’re excited to announce that all of our awesome Halloween costumes (only Halloween related items) are officially for sale! Proudly, our collection has several hundred items, and we’re here to help you with anything from Barbie to Medieval Rome. We’ll be sad to see them go, but it’s time for these costumes to fly the coop and explore on their own. Sleeeeeeves!!! We recently attended the Statement Sleeves exhibit at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and discovered some wonderful pieces and the history that goes along with them. The light blue and white bodice displays detachable sleeves that were developed in the 15th century. Embellished sleeves represented a higher status for the wearer of the bodice, and sleeves were detached and replaced to update the garment. The red velvet garment pictured is a dressing gown from the 1930s, as is the blue coat. At this time in history, sleeves were often more voluminous and incorporated intricate gatherings and stitching on the shoulders. The dark blue sleeve pictures is part of an evening gown from the same era and with a similar design to the red and blue velvet items from the FIT Sleeves exhibit. Additionally, enjoy the images of some of the more complex, interesting sleeves included in our collection: the burgundy and gold, metallic and white, and purple garments all parallel some of the beautiful gowns pictured in the popular Netflix show, Brigerton. Sleeves are such important parts of gowns and garments, and they can be such beautiful focus points on various items. We’re so lucky to have the chance to compare the sleeves from FIT to some of the items in our collection!
