Last month we had the pleasure of working with Devex and Mastercard’s Center for Inclusive Growth on the Global Inclusive Growth Summit, hosted by Studio Theater. This event brought together leaders from across a wide variety of industries to discuss DEIA in the corporate sector. We were responsible for planning all technical elements, managing labor, and sourcing gear for both the in-person and live stream aspects to the event. Another year of all-out success!

8 months of planning.
32 Architex technicians.
10 hour shifts.
3 days at sea.

This past week, all of the hard work culminated as Architex team led production in 3 main stages and over 20 auxiliary spaces aboard the Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady for at sea 2024.

The event was a rousing success. “You all inspire me like you can’t believe and in a way no words describe; with a gratitude so deep no words begin to express.”

We produce events. For good.

From the ancestral homelands of the Nacotchtank and the Piscataway, to the indigenous territories of the Ohlone (DC to Oakland), please join Architex as we recognize and honor the stewards of these lands and acknowledge the people - past, present, and future - whose presence we respect.

We are grateful that we get to call these ancestral lands home. May we continue to forge meaningful partnerships, amplify timely messaging, and cultivate lasting relationships.

From our Architex family to you, Happy Thanksgiving.

(We also acknowledge that the other ancestral lands on which our company resides belong to the Ute, Arapaho, Lakota, Cheyenne, Tonkawa, Lipan-Apache, Karankawa, Comanche, Coahuiltecan, and Lenni-Lenape peoples, and we respect, honor and give thanks to them as well.)

Spotlight on the Event Safety Alliance! The Event Safety Summit is coming up this week and we hope you’ll attend alongside us. Architex’ VP of Production, Jackie Mullen, is working with the Event Safety Alliance as a contributor to the Planning and Management for Live Events chapter of the Event Safety Guide 2.0. The ESA promotes safe event production for both crews and attendees through their trainings, resources, and advocacy, and we’re thrilled to contribute and learn from them.

Community is at the heart of WHY we do what we do, and sometimes we have the privilege of working with communities like the Culturefest World Music & Arts Festival. Taking place in the Appalachian South Folklife Center, this community of Princeton, West Virginia has been lifting itself up over the past couple of decades through the power of arts, music, and culture. Led by their inspiring leaders, Lori and Robert, the RiffRaff Arts Collective is at the heart of this transformation, and we are honored to be a part of the process, as we have been for the past 13 years. Peace and love!

We are so very pleased to welcome Rachael Albert to the Architex team as our new Production Manager! Rachael now joins us fresh off a stint on Broadway, as a member on the stage management team of “Just For Us.” Before joining our team full time, Rachael called a number of shows for Architex, and including a flawless show-call for the Main Stage of NCJW’s Washington Institute three day conference (photo above).

Rachael is a production manager and show caller based in Washington, DC. With a penchant towards social justice, Rachael is proud to be part of the Architex team to produce events for the greater good. Rachael brings to Architex a career in theatrical stage management ranging from regional theatre to Broadway and everything in between. A proud member of Actors Equity Association and a graduate of both the University of Michigan (BFA) and UC San Diego (MFA), Rachael spends her free time exploring restaurants, exercising (for fun!), and spending time with her loved ones.

Staff Spotlight: Max Queen

Max Queen serves as the Technical Production Manager for the Architex team. Max’s first passion was music, specifically guitar. Having majored in Recording Arts and Audio Technology at Indians University, he spent a significant amount of time working at the Kennedy Center as a stagehand before landing here at Architex. Max had a desire for growth outside of being a stagehand, and enjoys the opportunities, culture, and balance Architex offers. His favorite hobbies include spending time outdoors hiking, biking, fishing, and walking with his dog. He also loves exploring new places, especially National Parks!

The Architex Origin Story: Co-founder Greg Cornell-Casey entered the world of technical management of live events in 2008. He quickly discovered the disorganization and dysfunction routinely affecting technical planning and implementation, and started Architex to increase quality and value for his customers. Architex creates proprietary systems, air-tight planning and communication frameworks, and employs industry leaders to ensure high-quality ex*****on. Today, Architex has on-site presence, a remote broadcast department and a core staff of seven technical directors, production managers, and designers, plus an army of highly qualified freelancers. How can we put our systems to work for you?

Remote Production has never been easier! Our Technical Director’s home studio is centered by a flexible workstation supported by multiple secondary computers to allow for flexible production workflows that meet each one of our client’s needs. Fully networked with NDI, SRT, and Dante, and centered on an unthrottled gigabit connection from Sonic Internet, we are able to coordinate with our team from coast to coast on editing, graphic design and live production projects. We are constantly improving our workstations and integrating the newest event technology to lower cost and increase the reliability of remote projects.

STILL BROADCASTING! We offer virtual and hybrid broadcast production, including vMix session prep, creation and ex*****on, setting up and testing remote connections through a variety of communication protocols, and managing hardware for streaming onsite. Alongside remotely maintaining broadcast machines, we conduct ongoing research into new broadcast technology as part of our core work and make recommendations based on new developments in the industry.

Showcasing hybrid events! We recently got to work on the Global and Inclusive Growth Summit and partnered with the Aspen Institute, Mastercard, and Devex. “In a turbulent economic, environmental, and human context, the Summit brought private sector, social impact, and government leaders together to partner in new ways on meaningful solutions and approaches.” This event had an in person audience of about 300 people and an online audience of over 13,000. See a portion of this event’s highlight reel above!

Unity is one of our favorite apps! As a remote company, we cannot use traditional comms systems or even walkie talkies. Unity is our preferred way to communicate when we are running a virtual event from our offices all across the country! We love its flexibility with the option to listen and talk to different channels.

As a remote production company who produces a number of hybrid and virtual events, we are always up to date on the latest technology and practices to help improve our client’s events. One of the most important components to a successful event is safety which is why we love ‘The Event Safety Podcast.’ This is a podcast produced by the Event Safety Alliance that details ‘ideas, discussions, and news from the world of live event safety.’ Keeping up with podcasts like this as well as other industry related news and media means we can help make your event the best it can be!

You can NEVER have enough monitors!

Jackie’s control desk has grown over the last two years at Architex from one laptop in the kitchen of a tiny apartment to a sprawling four monitor desktop computer over two desks in a home office and two backup laptops. Out of sight are the messy stacks of printed cue sheets from shows past and a plethora of post it reminders. It also includes our ‘studio in a box’ camera kit and lighting for looking good in Zoom meetings and being able to provide tech support for clients with similar kits. Jackie’s MVP is a Razer Blackshark V2 Headset, which provides advanced sound quality and feels like being on a theatre headset at home.

How do we run state of the art broadcasts remotely?

Setting up a home office to be a broadcasting battle station can be tricky (and FUN for some of us). The same can be said for setting up *multiple* home offices around the country into a connected, decentralized broadcast control center. That’s what the Architex broadcast teams work with day in and day out. Let’s take a look at one setup:

This control station includes two high-end computers, one desktop and one laptop, each with high performance graphics cards for real-time video-rendering. It has many monitors for … well, monitoring, many control surfaces (buttons) for well … controlling, a few hundred terabytes of storage, and advanced networking infrastructure including an auto-failback network in case the primary network goes down. All of this is on a series of uninterruptible power supplies for backup if the power goes out.

The “behind the scenes” of remote broadcasting is harder to see than in-person, but it’s still there, and we love it.

Level Up Your Video Conferencing!

Headphones vs. Speakers: Which should I use?

Most of us have experienced noisy or problematic audio from a video call. Good audio is a must when hosting a quality meeting, so always make sure you prioritize it.

One of the simplest ways to minimize problematic audio is to use headphones rather than the speakers from your computer during your meeting. The most common problem with computer speakers is a feedback loop, which makes for some nasty audio. Speakers that are too loud can pick up audio from other participants on your call, send their audio back to them, and result in them hearing themselves talking.

While many video conferencing softwares have advanced noise-canceling features, these are not always foolproof. If everyone on the call is wearing headphones, this problem becomes non-existent.

Other Tips & Tricks:
Think about your environment for your call. You’ll want to have your video conferencing space as quiet as possible for your meeting. Ask yourself before starting: Is there a quieter place in your office or home? Is there a noisy fan in the room you can turn off? Is the room particularly echoey?

Do your headphones have a microphone? Be mindful of how it will sound:
Headsets with a built-in microphone such as AirPods or Earbuds can have issues of their own. If using earbuds, be mindful of where the microphone is dangling and try to tuck or pin it in place. Head movements and gestures can cause this kind of mic to bounce around on your clothing (which makes for some poor experiences as well).
