It’s been a long time coming, but I’m ecstatic to share my second full-length album, Can I be Honest

Those who know me know that I can be quite an opinionated person. For better or worse, I think the best relationships are fostered over the continued push towards candidness and honesty — in discussions, in art, in experiences, and more. This album signifies my own mantra, to push for ‘honesty’ in whatever form it takes in all things I do.

This album is a culmination of all my production experience so far. Over the past two years, I’ve poured countless hours into these 10 tracks, with some coming together in 2 weeks, and others taking 6 months. The album has a mix of soundscapes, ranging from soaring melodies, to booming club basslines and dissonant drops.

Bopping & Groovin’ into 2024 like… oh, and with a huge announcement

I’ve been working on these tracks for nearly the past two years and I’m thrilled to finally be sharing them with you all! It’s release day!! I’m thrilled to share my latest EP, titled Loss / Love. The tracks are a bit more sentimental than I’ve usually done. The past year or so has consisted of soaring highs and some tumultuous lows and I believe each of these tracks conveys those feelings in a pretty raw way. We’re locking it down this weekend 🔐🎶
I am so, so SO thrilled to be back at Soundcheck to open for both Jerro and OCULA! I’ve been absolutely obsessed with both of their work, from their records on Lane 8's This Never Happened label to Jerro’s massive Canopy Club sets. As 2022 comes to a close, I can undoubtedly say it’s been one of massive change.

Musically, it’s been a year I’m so proud of - from release my first full-length album, Fragments at the start of the year, to my first collaborative EP with my good friend Henry Galindo, which closed it out. I also fully retired the Chairman name and began the Kopca project - taking this whole concept of “you are the name” very seriously! Lastly, in this post-pandemic world, I’ve been able to get back to the dance floor and re-connect with so many amazing folks and musicians while also meeting a lot of new friends and connections along the way.

I’m so grateful to friends and family who have been with me on the Kopca project journey. I’m not quite sure what 2023 has in store for me, but I’m excited to make more music to share with you all! I’ll see you on the dance floor in 2023~

When Henry and I first set out to make a collaborative EP, we didn’t know how the tracks would develop, but we knew that they would share our distinct styles. Now nearly a year later, we know how those tracks sound and we are so excited to present our first collaborative EP together - ‘Congregate’.

The EP will be released this coming Sunday, December 18 on Eklektik Elektrik, a label headed up by our good friend and fellow Decibel Collective mate, Matthew Cha.

We will be hosting a release party this coming Sunday! More details to come, but for those in the DMV, we hope you can join us. We cannot wait to share these tracks with you!

We made it to Friday and we all looked good doing it~
It’s release day and I am so proud to present Flying High EP! This EP is one I’m truly excited to put out. It’s the first official music I’ve put out under the Kopca name and these tracks encompass the overall growth in music production over the course of the past year (with still much, much learning to do!!).

“The Name is You, You are the Name” - Sunsetting the Chairman name:

Four and a half years ago, and after many years of being an electronic music lover, I decided to pick up the Pioneer DJ SB2 and learn how to mix. I spent many hours learning how to line up tracks, properly phrase, and create grooves through mixes. When I first mixed two tracks together (I think it was tracks by KSHMR and R3HAB XD), I felt like a caveman discovering fire for the first time! The rest was history and the drive to be a DJ was ignited.

In 2017, I reconnected with old friends and William and Mary classmates, TonalTheory (already creating their own waves in DC), and played my first gig at the now-closed club Capitale on K St. Before the gig, I was asked what my stage name was and I landed on “Chairman”. Why? It was what we called our student president of my college’s Chinese Student Organization, and so, the name stuck.

In 2018, The Decibel Collective was formed, TonalTheory, MicFreak, and me - with a focus on underground electronic music. Our first gig together was at Loves Me Not Adams Morgan, a night to remember! I also started to give producing a shot, actively attending the Headroom Listening Sessions and learning the ins and outs of how to make electronic music, specifically, progressive house (something I’m still actively learning to this day!).

In 2019, my first ever record came out on Funktrap Records. The Decibel Collective was also growing, adding the ever-talented Henry Galindo, and adding more gigs at renowned venues like BackBar, El Techo, and eventually Flash.

In late 2021 into 2022, my first ever album, Fragments was produced and released. The Decibel Collective stormed back into the DC scene, with the addition of Matthew Cha and the creation of our monthly Red Room Parties - and the last few parties under the Chairman moniker.

As I look towards the future, I am forever grateful to the Chairman name/brand. I’ve grown and learned so much while taking the decks as Chairman, but I feel like now is the time to retire the name, particularly as I see myself entering a new phase in not only music but also my life.

From this point on, all my socials and links will be under the name Kopca. I have a handful of new content that will be coming out under Kopca - see the photo for dates. Thank you to those who have joined me on the journey so far, I am forever grateful and looking very much forward to the years ahead - I’ll see you on the dance floor!

It's been a minute and I'm really happy to say a lot of exciting announcements are around the corner, especially for me and the Chairman music project.

In the meantime, I'm so ecstatic to share the culmination of a passion project that the Decibel Collective and a few close friends spent months working on!
