"The thing with experiments is that you have to perform them to find out. Now in its 12th year, the ambitious opera laboratory run by the Washington National Opera pairs teams of composers and librettists with professional mentors—in this case the composer Gregory Spears and former U.S. poet laureate Tracy K. Smith—for a year of consultations, workshops, rehearsals and a trio of premiere performances.

As they step into an art form steeped in centuries of traditions and tropes, this year’s batch of AOI composers and librettists seem far less concerned with stories of the past than with predictions of the future, more averse to toxins than villains and more invested in the world we are making than the one we’ve long left behind." —Washington Post📰

It's as they say—the show must go on!

On Saturday, an incident caused the sprinkler system in the Kennedy Center Opera House to deploy, leaving it unusable for WNO's production of "Macbeth" set for that same evening.

The WNO team sprung into quick action, pulling together staff, artists, and musicians to move the night's performance to the Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University in a modified format.

We'd like to thank our artists for rallying to put on a spectacular performance for our patrons despite all odds. It was truly an extraordinary showing of spirit, creativity, grit, and grace under pressure. We’d also like to extend our sincere appreciation to Washington Concert Opera, who graciously allowed us to utilize the venue while in residence at Lisner Auditorium.

And to our patrons—thanks for sticking with us! We appreciate your flexibility and for allowing us to still put on a wonderful show.

Earlier today, an incident triggered the sprinkler system in the Theater Lab and Opera House.

While remediation is ongoing, today’s (11/23) 7 p.m. final performance of the Washington National Opera’s Macbeth will now take place in an alternate format at Lisner Auditorium (730 21st St. NW).

Today and tomorrow’s (11/23 and 11/24) performances of Shear Madness have been canceled.

Patrons for all affected performances will be contacted directly.

"Corner’s “Macbeth” is what we talk about when we talk about opera for everyone — stylish and psychologically rich enough to satisfy seasoned operagoers, and gripping enough that first-timers won’t even notice the three-hour run time.”—Washington Post

With powerful baritone Étienne Dupuis helming the title role, Ewa Płonka making full use of her keen dramatic sensibilities, bass Soloman Howard inhabiting the formidable Banquo, tenor Kang Wang earning one of the show's longest ovations as Macduff, and the WNO Chorus in full magnificent form, "Macbeth" is a raving success.

Grab tickets to the remaining shows: Nov. 15, 17, 19, 21, & 23👇
