The biggest compliment is to be asked back by a family to work on another wedding. I did flowers for the sister of today’s bride 14 years ago. Her little ones were flower girls in the ceremony this morning and it was so lovely to meet the parents again and catch up after all this time. It really is one of the most rewarding parts of doing flowers for such an intimate celebration, joining the families and getting swept up in their joy.

Summer color for a rehearsal dinner out in Virginia with Aimee Dominick making the finishing touches. The job of a wedding planner takes months and months, and this is the final performance. Then on the day coordinating all of the vendors with a minute by minute game plan and making sure everything is straight, in place, and ready to go. If you are not in this business, I think you would be astounded at how much preparation goes into events like this, and this is where the phrase teamwork really kicks in!!

I want to introduce you to Mary who’s made a big life change and joined us full time this week ❤️ We first met Mary when she was coming in to freelance, usually on weekends and always in the absolute best mood!! One of my favorite Mary stories was when she offered to help with a clean up as she going to an event downtown and would be out late anyway. As we’re tearing down the event she walks in wearing a long black evening gown and starts hauling flowers 😂😂 Mary was working on something very complicated to do with government contracts but loved working with flowers. In the spring we both sat on the loading dock and she talked about her love of flowers, how she felt working with them (it is a feeling you get) and how she wished she could do it full time. My response was “if you want to, then try it, if it doesn’t work out then at least you know you tried”. I always love a story of someone making a big life change to follow a passion. I was a TV news producer, all I’d ever wanted was to be chasing news stories around the world, and I had an amazing time. Then I had a baby and didn’t want to travel so much. It’s a long story….starts with a flower shop in london, evening classes in Baltimore, to setting up a flower business in my garage and doing my first ever wedding 7 months pregnant….and I’ve never regretted it. Karen studied fashion design and started her career in that world, then shifted gears to “go back to flowers” as that was her high school weekend job. I know it’s a luxury for many, but it goes without saying that if you can earn a living doing something you love - that’s the best of all worlds and you are so lucky. And we are lucky to have people work with us who love it. So am I advocating you go and quit your job today and take the jump? …..I mean it’s worth a thought 😜😜

Chatted with Amy Joyce a lot about the all the reasons behind changing job after having kids, and the transition to florist. In the studio today there are 10 of us working on events for this week, 20 years after starting the business… it worked!!
