On Monday, June 27 at 6:30pm, the Woman’s National Democratic Club invites you to an evening at the Whittemore House full of discussions, tasty delicacies, and musical flashbacks inspired by the Black performers who made U Street swing!
Soak up the vitality and the history of U Street from the 1900s to the 1950s with a backdrop of musical performances hailing legends such as Nat King Cole, Pearl Bailey, Cab Calloway and Billy Eckstine, performed by DC’s own Roz White and Steve Washington.
In addition, author, Briana Thomas, will be here to discuss her book, Black Broadway in Washington, DC and talk about the historical significance of U Street.

We’re celebrating another amazing woman from our history, Emily Newell Blair! 👩🏻💼 An active suffragette and writer, Blair was a founder of not only the @democraticwoman but also @leagueofwomenvoters! She served as vice chairman of the Women’s Committee for the DNC, Director of the Bureau of Women’s Clubs, helped women secure positions in the New Deal, organized more than two thousand Democratic women’s clubs around the country, and during WWII was appointed chief of the Women’s interests section of the War Department’s Bureau of Public Relations. She was an established writer, focused on the home as well as politics and feminist topics. An active woman in politics, the Whittemore House and the Woman’s National Democratic Club would not exist without her! #womenshistorymonth
The first of the amazing women at the Whittemore House is our namesake: Sarah Adams Whittemore! - Sarah Adams Whittemore was the daughter of Reverend Henry Adams, a descendant of President John Adams. An opera singer and prominent member of DC society, Mrs. Whittemore commissioned architect Harvey L. Page to create her Arts and Crafts home on New Hampshire Avenue in 1892. Thanks to her, we have a beautiful home today in Dupont Circle!
