Hi friends! Thanks for being here! We’ve been so fortunate to watch this community grow over the course of 2024. We’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many of you in person and others remain internet friends who we can only hope we’ll cross paths with one day! Either way, we’re pretty darn grateful you’re here for the mahjong content and stick around through all the random lifestyle content we sprinkle in the mix just for fun. Real friends don’t gate keep(do we still say this) a good deal, life hack or quality product so we guess it only makes sense.

There’s nothing worse than deciding on a line and realizing your opponents are also collecting the same tiles!! Statistically speaking, you’re more likely to be fighting over 6’s than any other tile (at least if you’re playing with the 2024 card). This is not because they’re used in the largest number of hands but because they can appear the largest number of times across the card.

During the Charleston, you’ll pass to each person two times. On first and second left, you pass to the same person back to back! This means they will see 6 tiles you choose to pass in a short amount of time. We tell people in Mahj 102 (our strategy lesson) to choose carefully during these passes. Swipe to read why!

We can’t wait to bring mahjong to the at the end of the month and if you’re in the Annapolis area, definitely check them out even if you can’t attend! While they are a membership based organization, a few spots are open to the public. Can’t think of a better way to get a feel for the community than joining one of their monthly events that are often members only!

is hosting a Palm Royale tournament on 10/19 and we’ll be there! Last we heard there were spots remaining and we’d love nothing more than to see some of you there and support another incredible woman in the mahjong space! Beginner friendly, but must know the basics.

A few weeks ago we saw a similar question come across an AMA from the and didn’t get a chance to share it before the story expired. So here we are making a spot for it on Tip Tuesday in hopes it clears up any unknowns for other new players!

Every so often a player will inadvertently discard a tile on their turn that could be used for a joker swap and the typical reaction to follow is a series of “ahhhs! When this happens in beginner lessons, almost always the table agrees without prompting to go back one step and allow the person who missed the swap to make the swap. This back step is frequently followed by the question, “could I have picked up that tile and made the joker swap myself?” Simply put, the answer is no. If you’ll remember, you can only pick up a discard if it completes a section of 3 or more identical tiles in the line you are going for. Subsequently that section must then be exposed making no space for a discard pick up/joker swap scenario within the official rules. It simply becomes a missed opportunity for the player that discarded the tile before remembering they could have swapped.

Repeat after me: BLANKS ARE NOT USED IN OFFICIAL NMJL PLAY 😅

We’ve touched on this in stories, but wanted to make sure it has a permanent place on our feed. We will never teach with them and they won’t be used in official tournament play. Blanks are only used per individual house rules. If you’re playing with a new group of friends and prefer the use of blanks, tread lightly as this can be a very polarizing topic in the world of mahjong.

We’re back! Hope everyone had a phenomenal long weekend. We sure enjoyed the gorgeous weather and downtime with family.

Now on to business…If it feels like all you hear is “nope, no, you can’t do that” when learning the game, we’ve got a yes for you today! This week we’re telling you there is a time when you can pick up a discard (assuming it’s not a joker😂) to use with any section of your line. When you are one to mahjong and the last tile you need to win is discarded, call for it and don’t think twice. You can use this tile fair and square even if it’s in a single or pair.

Back this week with another beginner tip! Passing pairs or consecutive numbers in the same suit (or not 🫠) can be advantageous to your opponents during the Charleston! If you really want to be strategic, avoid passing tiles that match any of the section headings (ex: don’t pass a 3, 6, and a 9 together, or a 2, 4, 6 or 8 together, etc) Try passing those tiles on separate turns. (because I can’t get over it 😂)

Following up on last week’s tip Tuesday for beginners! In the NMJL card, winds and flowers will be navy. This does not mean they are a separate suit, because these tiles do not have a suit. Feel free to pair any suit with them when making lines with flowers and winds! Swipe for an example. P.S. This is not a real line in the 2024 card 😊

This Tip Tuesday is geared towards our beginners! The first time you open the NMJL card it’s so easy to feel overwhelmed while also feeling limited in what you can do. Before you dive into the fine print of the lines in each section, keep in mind that the colors are there to tell you how many different suits are represented in a line, not which suits to use.

Next week we’ll dive deeper into how this relates to tiles that aren’t associated with a suit!

If you're a beginner, you're probably thinking, why would I ever want to pass a joker?! Don't worry, most times you wouldn't! Advanced players know there are some times where it's best to discard a joker (think double payouts in a jokerless hand or singles and pairs hands). Just remember, if you want to get rid of a joker, you'll have to wait to discard it until after the Charleston!

*Tip Tuesday* Better late than never — Anyone else feel like they were looking at the NMJL card with cross eyes the first few times playing? Us too! On top of all the other information coming at you in the first lesson it can be completely overwhelming.

We encourage everyone to take a step back and focus on the SECTIONS when trying to decide what to go for early in the game instead of specific lines. This also allows you to more easily pivot, if needed, after the Charleston and first few discards.

If you get two or more jokers in the deal, QUINTS become a possibility. You need at least two jokers to complete any hand in that section. It helps if you’ve also been dealt two or more of a numbered tile as well! Of course, if you get two or more jokers in the deal, most other hands will become easier to complete too! (Except hands with tons of singles and pairs!)

During regular game play, each player takes a tile and discards a tile. Your turn is over once you’ve discarded. But it’s Mahjong so you know there is a *specific* way you have to discard 😂 - always remember to place your tile face up and name it (ex: 9 dot). #dcmahj #mahjongg #howtomahj
