Organizational tip this week! Place the dice on top of the dealer’s leftover wall to clearly show where this wall came from and that it comes out last.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, read on ☺️.

The dealer or East should roll the dice and break their wall according to the number rolled. If they roll 4, they’d count 4 stacks in from the right end of their rack. They’d take those 8 tiles and push them off to the side for a second (if you have a moveable pushers this step is not necessary) and curtsy the remaining tiles in their wall.

There is so much going on in Mahjong, we like to simplify things where we can, this organizational tip does just that!

We’re back in action on Wednesday, April 9 and celebrating a full year of popping up around the neighborhood! We wouldn’t be where we are without the incredible support of Elizabeth at Three Littles and we are eternally grateful! Private lessons have had our calendars jam packed, but we’re thrilled to welcome you back to the mahjong table on Saturday, March 22!

For those new to DC Mahj, our socials are for both beginners and those with experience. Beginners will be seated together and have a beginner lesson. Those that have experience will have the opportunity to play at your own pace and can absolutely phone a friend and ask questions along the way, if needed. Everyone will be welcome to snack and Bird Bam Cheers their way through the evening with light drinks and refreshments as part of your ticket price.

Drum Roll, please! After an extremely jam packed January and February, we are finally looking ahead to getting events back on the calendar. Please save the date for our next socials and - Registration will go live on March 1 for Studio One and on March 12 for Three Littles.

If neither of those dates work, know you can always reach out about a private lesson. March is beginning to fill up and April will open for bookings on March 1. Dates will be limited as DCPS Spring Break takes place in April, so we recommend planning ahead and reaching out if you want to get on the books before May!

Don’t forget to block out moments in your week for the people and things you treasure most. So often we get caught in the rat race of do more, faster and better. If we focus on the little and the good things, the getting better, more efficient, capable of doing more, comes much more naturally and without sacrificing so much of our joy!

Today, that looked like the gym, lunch and mahj with a dear friend. Tomorrow it may look like turning on a show in the background while folding laundry and catching up on emails.

How do you hold yourself accountable for keeping space in your week for what brings you joy?

Did you just learn to play?! Welcome to the club! To make the most of your investment in lesson(s) be sure to schedule a time to play again within a week or two of your last lesson. This will not only allow you to improve your ability to identify a line, but it will help you commit the rules to memory! You’d be surprised how many people say they learned a few months ago, but haven’t played again since and don’t remember!

Can’t get a group together to play in person within a week or two, check out where you can not only practice with bots any time, you can join us or your friends for live games and utilize the exercise room for mahj drills to help you get better. Prepping for Galentine lessons we have tonight and reminiscing on this fun girl gang from January! Many of them come from families that play and even have vintage hand me down tiles which always makes our hearts swoon! Not only do we love the intergenerational sharing of the game, we love the reminder that while tiles can be pricey, they are and can be an heirloom passed down for many generations to come!

Looking back at all of the causes we were able to support in 2024 has us 🥹. I watched most of these organizations provide life-changing (and saving) resources to my former students throughout my teaching career. How special is it that I now get to support them?! It’s hard to describe how meaningful it truly is to me (Sallie 🤗). In addition to these fabulous organizations, we were able to support 2 Title 1 school PTOs, 5 more local elementary schools and - WE’RE SO GRATEFUL to be able to give back to our community (and others when we feel called) in this way. THANK YOU! Every lesson booked and every ticket sold got us to this point. We’re gearing up to support more wonderful non-profits in 2025. 👋🏼Hi everyone!! Lots of new faces around here so we wanted to reintroduce ourselves and our little business. We’re Sallie and MK, friends and neighbors living in DC. We met on the playground and spent a year trying to get to know each other and get together, but with 6 kids between us, the 1-block distance between our two houses was proving to be too much! When Sallie and her mom taught MK to play mahjong (and she was an instant pro!) something clicked. We suddenly found and/or made the time to get together because we loved playing mahj together! We decided we wanted to share this game with our community and help others connect around the Mahj table (it’s hard making friends as an adult!!!). Over the last YEAR(!!), we’ve met the most incredible people, watched new friendships grow and continuously pinch ourselves looking at this community. Every time a table of strangers exchange numbers at one of our socials, our hearts explode. In keeping with the practice of the NMJL, we donate a portion of our proceeds every month to a local non-profit. As we enter year 2 of business, we cannot thank you enough. Swipe to organize —> We tell our students to organize by suit, and within suit by number (even though, yes, I didn’t quite get the craks in numerical order 😅). This way you can see patterns within suits and be better prepared for passing/discarding! Dragons can be put with the suit they belong to OR set aside in their own group, your preference! P.S. which hands would you go for with these tiles? What are you discarding first?

There’s probably a way to set up no matter what kind of table you want to use. Another fun mail day @dcmahj and this time we had were lucky enough to have one of our tiny helpers to do the unboxing with us 🫶🏼 @bespoke_mahjong may be known for their automatic tables, but did you know they now have traditional tiles as well? During regular game play, each player takes a tile and discards a tile. Your turn is over once you’ve discarded. But it’s Mahjong so you know there is a *specific* way you have to discard 😂 - always remember to place your tile face up and name it (ex: 9 dot). #dcmahj #mahjongg #howtomahj
