ABOUT ME

My name is DJ Knightrin — a private, wedding and corporate event DJ in the DMV. I have been a big fan of music from a young age, avidly listening to every single genre from Smooth Jazz, Dance, Pop, Hip Hop, and Rhythm and Blues to Calypso, Soca, Kaiso, Dancehall and Reggae.

As a teenager listening to music helped me to successfully navigate life’s twists and turns. Music was my medium for expressing my thoughts and emotions. I did everything to music; it was almost as if I lived with a constant soundtrack.

I even studied with music; without it, my grades dropped. My other passion was combining genres in my spare time, like DJ Fidel. I felt like a song could be elevated by just mixing the melody with the unexpected; like playing an R&B song on a reggae rhythm. I enjoyed creating an element of surprise with my fusions.

Now, this brings me to my DJ name. KNIGHTRIN is a fusion of two words – “knight” and “trin” and represents where I’m from and also symbolizes a history of misunderstandings. “Knight” represents the high school I graduated from, Frank W. Ballou; a school that has a negative reputation for producing graduates that accomplish nothing with their lives. But that is slowly changing.

“Trin” is for the Caribbean island where I was born: Trinidad. I came to the United States when I was 12 and one of the biggest problems I faced was a lack of global knowledge on the part of the people I met. When I would tell someone where I’m from, the automatic assumption was that it was located somewhere in Africa or Jamaica.

It was during this stage of my life that I recognized the POWER MUSIC had to COMMUNICATE, HEAL and UNITE.

Today, I am DJ KNIGHTRIN, a successful graduate of Ballou High, proud Trini, and a private, wedding and corporate event DJ in the DMV. And in a metropolitan area as diverse as the DMV, I aim to shatter stereotypes and connect cultures through music.

I had no grand intentions of becoming a professional DJ, but in the early 2000s, I would create beats for fun and a friend gave me a software called Virtual DJ and a controller. He informed me that I had a keen ear for music and that I should try DJing. A few years later, I began Djing for my friends’ birthday parties and on special occasions. At one of those events, I met another individual who gave me the courage to DJ on a larger platform. With his experience and knowledge of the DJ arena, I was put on the roster as a local DJ for hire at clubs like the former Library Bar and Grill, Zanzibar Club at the waterfront and the Axum Club.

I have now been an independent event and wedding DJ for almost a decade. I have done everything from weddings, high school proms, Sweet 16s, clubs, other special events, and very unconventional themed parties.

With every job, I carry that little boy who studied to music and that teenager who found joy in creating genre-bending fusions. I aim to share my fire and passion with as many friends, clients, and couples!
