From 1800's to 2011 the society has changed as years went by and got easier, such as the horse and buggy slowly disappeared when the "NEW" motor vehicles was invented as transportation got better, the steam boats and railroads became connected from state to state, supermarkets expanded, they way house hold items were made and clothes were no longer made by the hand when machines took over. Could y
ou imagine the fear of going to sleep and not waking up in the morning, or being ambushed then scalped dead or alive by the Indians, and the only transportation you had was stolen including your supplies and food. In the 1800's life was tough and expecially dangerous, and if you got lost somewhere in the rocky mountains there was no search team to go out and find you nor a GPS, cause more then likely your going to end up dead. Hunting everyday to find good in order to survive either in the rain, enduring the heat of the sun, or freezing cold weather just to eat was hard enough for a person. The next thing on the list was your shelter, you either had money to buy a canvas wall tent or if you had no money, finding enough tree bark and use the pelts you had (animal skins) to make a roof just to keep you dry. From reading different literature, they acquired horses from the Spanish called (magic dogs) as their mobility allowed them to focus on the big game animals, and making them respected warriors. In 1776, few explores ventured into the Ute territory until in the 1810's when an increasing number of trappers and prospectors passed through and established temporary trading posts. When I wrote "Mountain Rose," I did alot of research and became very interested in the animal spirits and their ancestors how they called them for spiritual guidance. So that is when I decided to add a little of history giving a mixture of fiction, fantasy, adventure, and of course can not forget the romance. So after reading several of articles about the Utes, I find the tribe to be peaceful and kind, but everyone has there own ideas about the American Natives. I wanted to give this particular tribe a wolf like guardian but a human look from the outside to protect them from danger when called upon. My family and I are not Native American, expect for my younger brother who is half blood. I believe that people should not judge one another because of their race, color and heritage, but for who they realy are inside.
