Embrace your “competition” 💕

When it comes to running a business, it’s easy for some business owners to view competitors as enemies. However, having a community over competition mindset in your business and building strong relationships with your competitors can unlock a wide range of benefits.

You’ll have increased industry knowledge, expand your network of contacts and even discover potential partnership opportunities.

Networking is about bringing people together. Reach out to your competitors, learn from their experience, maintain the relationship and expand your network by asking them for referrals, introductions, or recommendations, and doing the same for them. Join your industry community, groups or associations and participate in their discussions or projects.

Embrace your “competition” as it will make you, your team and your business stronger and even more connected.

For those who have been following me for a while or that are new here, my name is Yvette Cardoso, owner of Wedding Creative & Design. As I write this I can’t believe I’m even writing this number but I have been helping couples plan their wedding for 14 years.

My husband and I got married 19 years ago. We were fortunate to get married at the amazing Fourth Avenue Theater! (The venue no longer exists in AK) I had a venue coordinator which I soon learned was not the same as a wedding planner. The day of, I spent most of the time getting the place ready for guests and asking family to help. It was not what I had envisioned doing. What started off as a hobby making sure that couples didn’t go through what we did turned into a career and passion in planning a stress free day for them.

Many years later as a business owner in Alaska I found it hard to make friendors as we were viewed as competitors. Now not only do I get to help couples but I also get to fulfill my passion in trying to build a community of vendors become friendors. I have been working really hard for this goal and I couldn’t have done it without The Certified Wedding Planner Society.

CWP Society has been helping me train to become an educator and now I get to be one and move forward with helping grow our wedding industry community not only here in Alaska but all over the world. I also get to work with these amazing certified educators. I’m so excited and can’t wait to show you what’s in store!

Networking encouragement & tips.

Are you attending a networking event soon? Networking events can be overwhelming, but with proper preparation, they can be valuable opportunities for professional growth.

Master Certified Wedding Planner & Certified Educator, Yvette Cardoso, owner of Wedding Creative & Design, shares her advice on how to navigate your networking event confidently:

Be positive and be yourself: Networking is all how you make it to be. People will connect with you if you speak positively and if they feel good about themselves by talking with you. Motivate and inspire them.

Prepare an elevator speech or introduction: When networking, wear a smile, dress for the occasion and tailor the right introduction to make a good impression. Create an elevator speech to share your story in 30 seconds or less. A good introduction can encourage a person’s interest and convince them to stop and listen longer.

Self-confidence plays a crucial role in networking as it empowers you to make meaningful connections, communicate effectively, and seize networking opportunities.

By cultivating self-confidence, you can navigate networking situations with ease and establish authentic relationships based on trust and mutual understanding. Building connections with ease is a lifelong skill that brings numerous benefits in the long run.

“Community over Competition”

Master Certified Wedding Planner & Certified Educator, Yvette Cardoso, owner of Wedding Creative & Design, shares her insight on the importance of Community Over Competition.

Being a business owner can sometimes feel like a solo journey and this can sometimes lead you to view other businesses as competitors, but it doesn't have to be that way! Changing your mindset that we are not competitors, but instead a community of business owners, all working towards a common goal of serving our clients and communities. Rooting “community over competition” in your company’s core values will be the best business strategy you could ask for.

Here are some ways this will benefit you and your business:

What’s a wedding without your favorite drink! Champagne towers have been a trend this year but why stop there. If you’re a coffee drinker how about an espresso martini tower, maybe a mojito tower or even a margarita tower. I think we will be seeing more of these for 2024 brides. 😆

I love winter brides. They are brave brides who are easy to work with and don’t complain if it’s freezing or snowing on their wedding day. They already know what they want for their winter wedding day that they have envisioned.

it is so important to have a certified professional in charge of the most important day of your life! Would you let your friend that wants to be a surgeon but hasn’t gone to school operate on you?

What is your dream wedding?
I just can’t wait for that special moment where it all comes together and i can officially share my entire life with the man i love. i have the whole wedding planned, he just needs to ask so I can set a date!

3 little things about you:

During the week i work at maple springs wasilla where i plan activities, crafts, parties, and other fun things for residents and staff to enjoy!

I am the only girl in my family, right in the middle of four boys.

When i’m not working i love quilting, knitting, baking, and spending time with family and friends.

Carter and Kamryn’s story actually starts at a middle school sporting event. She saw him one time and immediately had the BIGGEST crush on him, without even knowing his name or anything about him. Fast forward to freshman year of high school, they saw each other again and he came up to her and introduced himself and SHE KNEW there was something special about him, and he was going to end up in my life one way or another. They dated all throughout high school knowing that we were going to spend the rest of our lives together. They constantly talked about how lucky they were to find their person so young! They have literally grown up together and cant wait to continue to do so for the rest of our lives!

Brian and Alicia met 9 years ago while working as seasonal fisheries technicians at Bear Creek Weir in Seward. They’ve been together ever since. In June of 2021 they got engaged at that same weir where they first met. They figured since they met and got engaged in Seward they might as well get married there too.

Juliana & Jack

Juliana and Jack met through a TBA Summer Theater Academy in 2013. They worked together on several productions, and she had a huge crush on him.
Juliana asked him to prom in 2016, where they danced to “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” in the East High Commons and had their first kiss at her parents’ driveway. After prom, Jack went to do an internship on Capitol Hill and she went abroad for the summer to be an au pere, so they fell out of touch. They reconnected once in 2018, both home from college for the summer, after bumping into each other at Spenard Roadhouse, and went on a date to the state fair. Alas, Juliana went back to school and they lost contact again. In 2020, they found themselves in Anchorage at the same time, as the pandemic had forced her home from studying abroad, and the rest is history! Their story is truly of “right place, right time” and waiting until the moment is right. Jack proposed in August 2021 on the same rooftop they took their prom photos in 2016 (she happened to be wearing almost the exact same colored dress, which was the only thing left in my closet after packing for Chicago). Now, they live in Chicago with their fur baby, Luna, and can’t wait to come home to be surrounded by mountains and family when we tie the knot!

I love my job! Every couple I work with interviews me so we can make sure that both parties mesh well. A lot of my work I had to learn myself but after becoming a certified wedding planner through I have grown and learned more as a planner so that I can become the best at my job.
