Today is the day!

Later today I’ll announce ALL of the businesses who are involved in my “not your average cookie cutter” colab, how and what you can buy and how to enter to win!

There are more than a dozen women owned businesses involved and we are talking about some fantastic gift baskets and a HUGE giveaway! (If you messaged or emailed to get in on this and didn’t hear back from me or didn’t get in on this one..please stay tuned! I’m already working on a Valentines Day Colab AND I’ve been asked to partner with one of my favorite businesses in town for an International Women’s Day project, I’ll be looking for your involvement for those two events!)

Join us at Spectrum Generations’ Muskie Community Center Thursday, December 14, 5 - 7 p.m., as we welcome Robin Getchell from The Robin's Nest in Waterville as she walks us step-by-step in creating a beautiful Christmas arrangement.

Social hour begins at 5 p.m. where you can enjoy hors d ’oeuvres from Maine Pine Catering and a cash bar will be available with beer and wine.

Cost is $55 per person. Preregistration is required. Tickets must be purchased by Thursday, Dec. 7.

All materials will be provided. Participants are asked to bring own clippers.

Okay here it is Nest Fans!

The “not your average cookie cutter colab” deets (well some of them🤣)

I must confess that this started as just a silly little thing, and if I’m being very honest it was the result of me feeling some sort of way about someone calling my website “ a cookie cutter website”🤣 So after I got done being a little annoyed I decided to turn it around and asked my friends at Duckie Buddies if they could provide me with some cookies to pair with some flowers to offer as a package. They cooked up a little idea and my “not so average cookie cutter” colab was born!

Very quickly this turned into something HUGE and I’ve had so many women business owners reach out to ask how they can be part of this thing!

SOOOOO…I turned something negative into something positive. I found dozens of women owned local businesses by my side and excited to partner with me and I’ve decided to keep the momentum going into the new year, by featuring a different local businesses services-products in my front window! We have such great visibility and the opportunity to bring attention to other small businesses who might not have a high visibility location!!!

PLUS the biggest giveaway in Nest history that will include a mini photo session, a massage, a facial, a spray tan, a 5 pack of classes from Soul Revival, coffee, fudge and bon bons, flowers, a beautiful handcrafted pendant, Elm City CrossFit swag, a simmer pot, a gingerbread cookie decorating kit, skin care products, a gift certificate for a nail salon, and more…YES more! (But I left my list in my office today at the shop. I knew I shouldn’t have gone in there today🤣)

I’d planned to give you all of the details tonight but I’m not quite ready, almost…I promise!

I’ll announce the contents of the gift baskets and pricing very very soon so that you can finish off your holiday shopping at The Nest while supporting LOCAL BUSINESSES! I’ll also announce how you can enter the giveaway!

Once again..this really turned into something so beautiful and has connected me with so many businesses♥️ I am working on putting together the final details, thank you for your patience Nest Fans!!

Peep the dates on the calendar 🤣I don’t think I’ve been in my office since July. I am almost always at the front counter, at a design bench or behind the wheel making a delivery (or in the woods tipping or in the swamp cutting berries or in my basement making wreaths) but today I actually “hid” in my office to get caught up on a few things.

I don’t know if it’s a “real” term or not but I call myself a working owner. There isn’t much I don’t do at The Nest and the small business owners who I admire the most are also “working owners”. We do it all and we wouldn’t be here without all of YOU! ♥️ Thanks for supporting your local small business and the hard working “working owners”

Let’s talk floral “wire services”

Let’s talk “order gatherers”

In the floral industry there are some large companies with sneaky business practices! How do they effect local real flower shops and how do they effect consumers?

Wire services are big (well known) companies like FTD and Teleflora, they served a purpose (years ago) before the internet made it easy to research local flower shops and to place your orders directly with shops across the globe. These companies charge member florists a TON of fees, for example…

Hardware (computer, printer, cash drawer, receipt printer) provided by wire service.
Membership Fees
Advertising Fees AND MORE!

Customers pay the price also! These companies charge large fees, they over promise and under-deliver, leaving customers disappointed.

Order gatherers are the WORST! These are companies like Ava’s Flowers, 1-800-FLOWERS, Terry’s Flowers, From You Flowers (and more!) These are companies who simply TAKE your orders and send them to a local florist! They appear to be a local shop! (Google florist near me and I’d bet one of these companies pops up in the number one spot) These companies promise customers flowers that are out of season and are not priced appropriately. They offer same day delivery and to be honest their employees probably have never seen most of the flowers that they are selling! They are HUGE call centers and they are disastrous for the floral industry!

We work with a company called Flower Shop Network. They are a web hosting company and a network of local florists. ALL of the shops who work with Flower Shop Network are REAL local florists. Why did I select this company to host my website? It’s highly customizable and customer service is second to none! We do not pay exorbitant fees and penalties. I have access to a network of real flower shops around the world if I need to assist a customer with an order going outside of our local area.

How do you avoid order gatherers?

Look for a “real” local address when placing your orders online, look at Google Maps to make sure the business you are working with has a real location and listing. Look at the reviews, ask someone you know in the area you’re sending flowers if the “florist” you are interested in using is actually a real shop!

There are florists who are members of Teleflora and FTD and they’ve done the math, they enjoy the convenience of these companies technology and they’ve found that these platforms benefit them. We are not one of those shops and we do not work with these companies nor do we accept orders from order gatherers.

When I took this pic it was to show off these gorgeous handmade ornaments…BUT…what I noticed when looking at it was my hand..COVERED with pine pitch, balsam needles, scratches and cuts.

These are the hands that made 150 wreaths this year, the hands that loaded boughs into the van, and cut red berries in the swamp, that designed arrangements and decorated Christmas trees, hands that are dry and achy.

Sometimes when I’m out and about in town I feel like I need to explain or to apologize for the condition of my hands. But mostly I’m proud of these hands, messy or not, these are the hands that built this dream♥️ Thanks for joining me on this wild journey Nest Fans. I couldn’t do this without you.

A very generous regular customer of ours brought 5 radio flyer sleds to us and asked that we decorate them, sell them AND donate all of the proceeds to a local organization that benefits children. We discussed some options and landed on The South End Teen Center as the organization that we will be donating to. ♥️

We will be offering these for $100 each and haven’t decorated the other 4 yet and would be happy to design them to order in any colors! (We have lots and lots of pretty holiday ribbon to select from!)

What started as a silly little thang has turned into the most amazing thing! The power of community, the connections I’ve built around this amazing community, I just have no words to describe this feeling. I think that what I’m seeing is the return of the foundations and relationships I’ve been building for 5 years coming full circle. We might still be the “newest” flower shop in town but aren’t the smallest anymore and I’d even go so far as to say we are the ♥️ of the floral industry in Waterville.

I think we’ve finished our outside decorating! braved the cold today and hung garland on our light pole (wish we could do ALL of the light poles on Main St!)

We are working hard to decorate LOTS of wreaths for the weekend for all of your decorating needs! We have bunches of fresh boughs, red berries, winter baskets full of greens, pinecones, bows and more.
