Jazz at The Caspe Terrace

Jazz at The Caspe Terrace What can you expect? They also compose their own fantastic repertoire, and play a passel of Misha Mengelberg tunes, many dating back to the fifties.

Abe Goldstein and Jackie Garnett are pleased to announce a once-in-a-lifetime lineup of internationally-renowned jazz artists in the intimate setting of The Caspe Terrace in Waukee. April 9:

*** The ICP Orchestra ***

http://www.icporchestra.com/

Pianist Misha Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink bring the cream of the crop of the Dutch jazz scene for ICP Orchestra's first ever performance in Io

wa. Here's what trumpeter Dave Douglas has to say about ICP: "These musicians can swing like mad when they want to, and can play the most sensitive cafe ballad at the drop of a hat. But the crux of what they do, as the name implies, is improvisation. And they do it as well as anyone out there." May 5:

*** Lee Shaw Duo ***

At age 85, Lee Shaw is keeping the jazz piano tradition alive. Lee definitely bridges the generation gap in jazz. She was a former student of Oscar Peterson and a former teacher of John Medeski (Medeski, Martin & Wood). She palys standards. She writes her own tunes. Most of all, she swings in the style of the great pianists that have inspired her - Oscar Peterson, Elmo Hope, Tadd Dameron and others. Lee will be joined by long-time associate Rich Syracuse on bass. It's not her age that will amaze you, it's her playing. June 4:

*** Dave Liebman Duo ***

http://www.daveliebman.com/home.php

This will be a first of saxophonist Dave Liebman, who cut his teeth in the bands of Miles Davis and Elvin Jones. He has never played in Central Iowa in his 40-plus years as a jazz musician nor has he ever performed in a duo setting with his long-time associate, guitarist Vic Juris. having recently been awarded the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master title, Dave's recent recording of Ornette Coleman compositions is topping the jazz charts throughout Europe and the U.S. Expect to be blown away as Dave blows through an evening of standards, jazz classics and originals on soprano and tenor saxophone. All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and are followed by a meet-the-artist reception. Tickets are $25 for each performance in advance and $30 at the door. Student pricing is available. To order tickets, send checks to Abe Goldstein, 4011 Plainview Drive, Des Moines, IA 50311. Seating is limited to 150 people. For more information, contact Ave at 515.279.6452 or [email protected]

BOTTOM LINE: Like a tightrope walker working without a net, guitarist Greg Skaff navigates the terrain of a chordless trio as he balances his rich chordal voicings with fleet horn-like single line solos on eight original compositions and a tune each from Duke Ellington and Thelonius Monk.

SOULMATION RECORDS 001. (RECORDED OCTOBER 2023) Guitarist Greg Skaff has nowhere to hide on Re Up. Unlike some of his past recordings, there is no organist comping chords for him. Unlike his perfor…

BOTTOM LINE: Plays Ellington and Strayhorn would have been a great release for baritone saxophonist Brian Landrus had he played the 14 tunes accompanied by his quartet of guitarist Dave Stryker, bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Billy Hart. Instead, Landrus created elegant arrangements for his bass sax, bass clarinet, contra alto clarinet, piccolo, flute and bass flute giving these masterpieces a truly masterpiece sound all their own.

PALMETTO 202301 (RECORDED AUGUST 2023) Brian Landrus brings a new richness to the music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn on Plays Ellington and Strayhorn. Some of that richness comes from the …

BOTTOM LINE: Like the Harold Arlen tune she interprets with grace and imagination, Gin in Jill McCarron’s “Shining Hour,” 58 minutes of familiar and original tunes performed by a responsive rhythm section and guest artists such as saxophonist Vincent Herring and trumpeter Randy Brecker. I look forward to more shining hours form this rising piano star.

JAZZ BIRD RECORDS  (RECORDED MAY 2023) Jill McCarron is a tease and it’s not just because of the seductive CD cover, it’s because of how she seduces you with her prowess as a pianist. On …

BOTTOM LINE: Following releases with pianoless quartets, wind ensembles, string ensembles, septets and more, bassist Bruno Raberg returns to a format he pursued on his 2002 recording — the tentet. The results this time around are a bit more daunting with music that is more suspenseful than swinging and more moody than memorable.

ORBIS MUSIC (NO RECORDING DATE) The best way to describe bassist’s Bruno Raberg’s Evolver is to use three other words that begin with the letter “E” — episodic, evocative and empowering. Episodic, …

BOTTOM LINE: What does morning sunlight through a curtain sound like? You’ll find out on The Act of Noticing, the first musical outing from Espiral, a trio of Josephine Davies, David Beebee and Martin Pyne. This freely improvised session of eleven tunes envelopes you in an impressionist soundscape inspired by nature, moods and the interaction of trio members.

BOTTOM LINE: This understated recording makes a huge statement about the patient restraint saxophonist David Bixler and this quartet demonstrate as they explore the richness and subtleties of eight originals in which simple melodies evolve into jazz treasures.

BOTTOM LINE: With a title like Searchin’, I was hoping pianist Anthony D’Alessandro and his band, featuring trumpeter Benny Benack III, would move jazz forward. Sadly, his search ended with a release of tunes that offered little of what Whitney Balliet once described as the essence of jazz — “ the sound of surprise.”

ONTARIO ARTS COUNCIL  (NO RECORDIN DATE) I am not certain what pianist Anthony D’Alessandro was searching for on Searchin’.If he was searching to cement his reputation as a piano player steepe…

BOTTOM LINE: Once again, Cellar Jazz delivers a strong release that demonstrates straight-ahead jazz is alive and well. Pianist Brandon Goldberg and his trio pay their respects to the jazz giants who came before them in a live session that, with the exception of two originals, covers familiar ground — George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Harry Warren and even Miles Davis — in a tasteful and memorable manner.

CELLAR MUSIC 50123  (RECORDED JANUARY 2023) I am not certain where it came from, but my father would always say, “Blessed is a time when the young listen to the old and the old listen to the y…

BOTTOM LINE: Detroit has the Jones Brothers. Philadelphia has the Heath Brothers. Rochester has the Mangione Brothers. Indianapolis has the Montgomery Brothers. Now we can add Edmonton to that list with saxophonist Jim Brenan and his brother trombonist Craig Brenan. Their new release, Valley of Silence, captures the sound and excitement of the late 1970s Woody Shaw Quintet — the music they heard live as impressionable jazz teenagers .

BOTTOM LINE: Under the Covers is a no-nonsense release from guitarist Steve Luciano. No- nonsense because it is a straight-forward, in-the-tradition release from a guitarist who does not rely on effects and tricks to hold your interest. He simply relies on the lessons learned from his one-time teacher Sal Salvador and the support of friends he has played with for over thirty years to deliver a long overdue small group performance.

BOTTOM LINE: A guitarist and organist from Vancouver (Mike Clement and John Lee) walk into a recording studio with a New Orleans drummer (Herlin Riley). That may sound like the beginning of a joke, but it’s the story behind Hittin’ It, one of the finest jazz organ trio sessions I have heard in a while, and that’s nothing to laugh about!

BOTTOM LINE: You won’t find vocalist Angela Verbrugge on the cover of leading jazz magazines, but that shouldn’t stop you from checking out Somewhere. Verbrugge will earn your attention with her clear, casual and comfortable take on seve familiar and some “new-to-me standards.” This compilation of recordings made between 2017 and 2021 also features some attention-getting accompaniment from the likes of bassist Cameron Brown and pianists Ray Gallon and Miles Black.

BOTTOM LINE: Timing Is Everything is what you would expect from Eric Alexander. He attacks every song with a flourishes, swoops and amazing technique. Fans of the tenor sax will be in awe of Alexander’s command of his instrument. However, he leaves little room for listeners to take a breath and enjoy the beauty of the music.
