No small potatoes: Wisconsin Elks donate more than 8 tons of potatoes

Local lodges in the Wisconsin Elks Association including Waukesha Lodge 400 have donated 17,225 pounds of potatoes to food pantries, shelters, first responders and other groups who prepare meals and provide help to their communities.

It started when Past State President Karl Hanke of Wausau Elks Lodge issued a “potato challenge” in 2023 after noticing Kwik Trip stores offered a deal for 5-pound bags of potatoes around the holidays. Hanke bought some potatoes and donated them, but additionally he challenged Elks members to do the same.

The Elks organization is made up of volunteers who give back to their communities through service and donations, so they seized on Hanke’s challenge.
Even members could not have imagined the 4,000 pounds they donated in 2023 was small potatoes. When the “Potato Challenge” was issued this year, Elks Lodges throughout Wisconsin dug deep.
Individual members as well as lodges opened their pocketbooks, gathered the potatoes, and delivered them throughout November and into mid-December to help their communities.

Once again we have shown that as Wisconsin Elks, we step up to help the community. Members had fun with this idea and helped Waukesha Lodge 400 donate over 1,000 pounds of potatoes to families and food banks in the local area

The overwhelming response by members already has them talking about next year when they have their sites set on more than 10 tons of potatoes.

Attention members, family and local business…

Waukesha Elks Lodge is continuing to improve our curb appeal. In the spring, we are adding a memorial brick patio to the main entrance of our Lodge.

We are wanting to not only remember/recognize our members and their families, our fellow Lodges, but also our local businesses that support our community just as we do. You can now order a brick in memory or honor of, or to recognize your business.

As we are strong with our community…. We will never forget November 21, 2021.

Three years ago we lost six lives:
💙 Virginia Sorenson
💙LeAnna Owen
💙Tamara Durand
💙Jane Kulich
💙Wilhelm Hospel
💙Jackson Sparks

Nearly 70 others were physically injured. Thousands of others experienced mental and emotional injuries. Our lives have been forever changed.

While great pain was inflicted, we continue to show that we are a community of bravery, love, compassion and unity.

Everyone is invited to come together at 4:39pm today in person at Grede Park (Near 538 Riverwalk Drive) or online on the City's page as we dedicate the Parade Memorial.

We are Waukesha Strong.

Our Story

In the summer of the 1890’s blue bloods from the South filled Waukesha’s resort hotels in great numbers. These people, familiar with the luxurious ease and service of the old South, as well as other parts of the nation, came to drink of the health-giving waters they freely bubbled up from the local springs.

Many of the men who gathered here were Elks in their native citiies and the elite of Waukesha heard of the good work the order was achieving.

One of the frequent visitors at the Fountain House was Basil M. Allen, a Grand Lodge Office of the Benevolent and Protective order of Elks. Because of his enthusiasm he soon aroused interest among the men of our city to form a Lodge in Waukesha. Brother Allen was a Past Exalted Ruler of the Birmingham, Alabama Lodge and held in high esteem.

At the same time, another event was taking place that would alter their plans. The Wisconsin Central Railroad had its car shops and division office in Waukesha, and quite a number of the men employed there were also deeply interested in the Elks. The company announced the removal of the shops and offices to Fond Du Lac and scores of Waukesha residents were moved to that city. Fond Du Lac already had a Lodge - No. 57 - so these men joined that Lodge, but kept their contact with their old friends from Waukesha.
