Bust of a Youth (The Beneventum Head). Place of origin: Herculaneum, Italy. Date: c. 50 BC. Medium: Bronze, Copper inlays for the lips. Dimensions: 33 cm in height.⁣

The sculpture portrays the face of a young man barely out of adolescence. His lips were embellished with red copper and it originally had inlaid eyes. The wreath of wild olive suggests that this figure is a victorious athlete, and the form of the bust indicates that it was set atop the pillar of a herm. The precise arrangement and striations of the hair are reminiscent of works by the fifth-century B.C. sculptor Polykleitos, but the melancholy expression and the delicate appearance of the face are characteristic of first-century B.C. Roman creations made in Classical Greek style.⁣

Thee work is generally known as the “Benevento Head,” although this name is based on a misunderstanding that has long since been cleared up: the bronze was found not at Benevento but during archaeological excavations carried out at Herculaneum, also in the Campania region of southern Italy. Presented to the lord of Benevento by Ferdinand II, king of the Two Sicilies, the head was later mistakenly thought to have been discovered at Benevento.⁣

Stunning Roman mosaic discovered under street of Hvar in Croatia.

Archaeological endeavors on the picturesque Croatian island of Hvar have unveiled remarkable remnants of the Roman era, shedding light on the island’s rich history.

Among the remarkable discoveries is an exquisite mosaic dating back to the 2nd century CE, re-excavated in the heart of Stari Grad (Old Town). This mosaic, once concealed beneath a narrow street, was part of a luxurious Roman villa Urbana. Its geometric and floral motifs showcase superior craftsmanship.

A mummified dog and baboon found buried together at the tomb KV50 in the Valley of Kings. The tomb, along with KV51 and KV52, seem to have formed a burial ground for royal pets. Possibly dating to the reign of Amenhotep II (1427–1401 BC), now on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The golden moment that Tutankhamun’s coffin was discovered in Egypt in 1925.

Inside his giant red stone sarcophagus, which measures nearly 3 metres long and weighs well over a tonne, the wrapped mummy of Tutankhamun was buried in three separate coffins. The innermost coffin was made of solid gold, weighing 110.04kg.
