The dreaded Japanese Beetles are here again! Things I’m learning about them is the Winsome fly is their main predator in Japan that keeps them in check. Cilantro flowers help bring in the Winsome flies.
The Winsome flies are starting to move in from the Eastern states.
I drop the flies into water and feed to the chickens.

I learned something new today about if some of your plants in the garden are not looking right.
Depending on where you get your compost, especially if it has manure in it, this could be the issue.
Grazon is an herbicide used in some pastures and hay fields to control certain weeds.
The manure from these fields should not be used in compost for your vegetable garden. It harms certain plants.
Root veggies and brassicas are NOT affected.

Michael recently left me a heartbreaking comment on one of my previous posts about…

I roast mine at a 400° oven, stir every 30 minutes. It’s ok to get a bit of char on them, adds flavor. I use my food processor to purée after they’re roasted. No need to peel, just remove core and any bad spots. The food processor will blend the skins and seed so you hardly notice them.

The sparse rainfall and hot, humid weather we've experienced in Wisconsin has created optimal conditions for powdery mildew. Powdery mildew is a plant disease that appears exactly as it sounds—infected plants look like they are covered in powdered sugar or talcum powder. On most ornamental plants, the disease is merely a cosmetic issue, but it can be a big problem for vining crops in the vegetable garden. If you're dealing with powdery mildew on your plants, check out this helpful publication by UW-Madison Plant Pathology: https://bit.ly/43MhmVg
