This beautiful plaque, commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the nonprofit Friends of McLean organization, was unveiled last night!

Start a family tradition or come by yourself to West Linn’s historic McLean House for “Home for the Holidays” on Saturday, Nov. 24. With music, Santa waiting for Mom or Dad to snap a photo as a child climbs into his lap, tea and wine tasting, alpaca petting (weather permitting), Holiday shopping, and even a mini photo shoot with a professional photographer (by appointment), it’s a great way to finish your Holiday shopping. The first 100 families will carry home a swag bag of coupons and other goodies as well. This is an unusual opportunity to visit the historic home of one of Clackamas County’s most famous doctors, Edward McLean and his wife Anne. Usually closed except by appointment, you can roam through its beautifully decorated rooms and garden, lovingly restored by The Friends of the McLean Park and House. Join the Friends and the West Linn Chamber of Commerce to celebrate National Small Business Saturday and support West Linn’s local businesses. We wrapped up September with another great volunteer event! The Volunteer Resource Fair, organized by Friends Of McLean Park and House and Clackamas County Volunteer Connection, featured a wide array of organizations offering volunteer opportunities in and around our community. Thank you to everyone who attended and for the important work you all do!

Our Gazebo!
Back in 2006 a group of volunteers came together to build our beautiful white gazebo. Which has become the center and heart of many weddings here at the McLean House.

Life gets busy and can be hectic. Taking time out of your week to get out of the house and away from work is always a great idea. Oregon is filled with so much beautiful scenery all year round. We encourage you to get out and see what there is to offer. If you need an escape from those college classes, stressful job or today's news, go for a walk in the park! Outside park hours are from 7am-10pm during week.

Lighting of the Trees!
September 25th 5:30pm-7:30pm. Join us for a bit of networking and the lighting of the beautiful and giant sequoia and Laurel Bay trees here at the McLean House!
Some interesting facts about these trees- Sequoias are evergreen conifers, their cones are woody and brown, ½-2 ½ inches long with scale thick at the edge. The bark is reddish brown and up to 24 inches thick. Heights of these trees can be up to 295 feet and up to 35 feet in diameter. These massive trees were around before dinosaurs and have outlived them by 70 million years! Unlike the sequoias, Laurel bays are much smaller- usually only growing to about 30-40 feet high - though come check out how tall the one is here at McLean Park!

Volunteer Opportunities

We have a lot of great things coming this September! First- September 22nd from 9am-12pm we have a SOLVE beach and riverside cleanup at the McLean House and Park. It’s an opportunity for groups of people to come together to do something great for their community. If you have or are a student who needs volunteer hours, this is a great way to do so.Second- September 29th from 11am-2pm The McLean House will be hosting a volunteer community resource fair. It's a great way to get in touch with other organizations that need the communities help.

Edward McLean was sent to Atlanta to work for the centers for disease control: bacteriology and pathology. After the Mexican American war where he was apart of the Oregon National Guard as a medical officer, Edward became a professor of Bacteriology and Pathology at Oregon Med school in Portland. Because of all this training he was able to identify Oswego Lake (Sucker Lake) as the breeding ground for malaria. They were able to eradicate the Mosquitos and prevent Malaria.

Back in 1984 The McLean House had the honour of hosting the Homecoming party of the newly crowned Miss Oregon. At 22 years old Renee Bagley became the first African American women to win the Miss Oregon title!

In 1981 during the early years of the McLean House restoration, a bee keeper from Lake Oswego- Wilma McNulty came to the rescue and helped the volunteers safetly extract a honey bee Nest which held approximately 30,000 Honey Bees! The bee nest was up in the attic for quite a while before volunteers discovered it. The story made the West Linn Tiddings and the Oregonian back in April of 1981

Co-hosted by Friends of McLean and the Clackamas County RSVP program, come ask questions and learn in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. A grilled hot-dog lunch will be available for purchase.

Back in February this 1868 Grand Piano was donated by Clifford Nelson, he wanted it to go someplace where it would be taken care of an appreciated. The Piano is currently in the McLean House living room where it is enjoyed by visitors at the McLean House. A little History…….. This year marks the 175th anniversary of the Oregon Trail, and there are so many stories of people that helped shape our state's history. Hugh Burns, a native from Ireland, arrived on one of the first wagon trains to homestead on a 640-acre claim here in 1842. Burns plotted a town he called Multnomah City, which he hoped would one day become state's capital. Obviously, that never came to be!
