In horticulture, a w**d is typically defined as an unwanted plant. Tansy ragwort often carries a negative reputation as a w**d by common standards. However, for cut flower enthusiasts like myself, this low-maintenance filler flower is cherished for its vibrant, dense blooms and cheerful demeanor. Similar to how Meg Ryan's character in "You've Got Mail" describes daisies as happy flowers, I believe tansy ragwort can also be seen in a positive light. It's about finding beauty in unexpected places in our gardens.

In a world of high technology and innovation, taking a moment to savor the simple pleasures of nature feels like a breath of fresh air. However, that doesn't mean we can't have a little fun with our AI friend, ChatGBT. After a farm walk this morning, we couldn't get over the beauty of our sweet peas, so I asked ChatGBT to write a poem about them, and it did not disappoint. Enjoy!

In gardens kissed by gentle breeze,
Where sunlight weaves through verdant trees,
There blooms a flower, delicate and rare,
With tendrils reaching, soft and fair.

Sweet peas, in hues of pastel grace,
Their fragrance whispers, time and space,
Entwining hearts with fragrant strings,
As memories bloom on whispered wings.

With petals soft as morning dew,
They dance in gardens, dreams pursue,
Each blossom tells a tale untold,
Of love and longing, pure and bold.

Oh, sweet peas, your tendrils twine,
In gardens where the soul aligns,
Your beauty paints the quiet hours,
In perfumed hues of nature's flowers.

So let us cherish, day by day,
The sweet peas blooming on our way,
For in their fleeting, tender art,
They echo love from heart to heart.

Maybe you've heard the story of how 4th Quarter Farm came to be—maybe not. But our mission was born from grief and love. On this anniversary month, I think it's important to recognize our beginning with a little story time from Ann.

"4th Quarter Farm was an idea that flourished into reality on July 4, 2018, just over 6 years ago. It has been equally challenging and transformative. After breaking my leg badly that summer and losing my beloved husband Lynn to Alzheimer's in August, there was a deep void to fill. I needed something absorbing, beautiful, and fulfilling.

Throughout my life, flowers and gardening have always held a special place in my heart. The experience of caring for Lynn highlighted the needs of seniors in assisted living, which inspired me to take action. I delved into studying, planning, and gathering supplies—books, seeds, dahlia tubers, roses, and all the essentials to create something meaningful. Grief transformed into research, which transformed into flowers and now a whole farm dedicated to simply putting a smile on the face of seniors.

But it's not without help! With the invaluable support of volunteers who dedicated their time and effort, our flower farm began to bloom. From nurturing baby seedlings to seeing vibrant blooms flourish, every step felt like a dream becoming reality and what a healing experience that has been!

From the outset, our mission has been clear: to sell flowers to sustain our efforts and, more importantly, to bring joy to seniors and caregivers alike. As one nurse so beautifully expressed it, 'You are giving to those who are unable to reach the flowers themselves.'

Together, we're creating moments of happiness and surprise, one bouquet at a time. Thank you all for being part of this incredible journey!"

There's a thing that Ann says early in the season, and that is "I know it looks like nothing now, but pretty soon these flowers will drive you!" And this is exactly where we are. Our flowers are blooming in explosive amounts and were working hard to keep up with our flowers! Despite the heat, our volunteers are tirelessly picking, arranging, and preparing 90 bouquets for seniors at Avamere at Park Place retirement and assisted living facility.
Your support means the world to us and to the seniors who receive these beautiful bouquets. If you know someone who is looking for a florist, please pass our information along! Together, we're making a difference one flower at a time. 💐

🌱 A Season of Learning and Growth 🌱

Over 10 weeks ago, we eagerly began putting our first plants in the ground. The start of the season is always filled with anticipation, planning, problem-solving, and bed preparation. We tested our soil and knew early on that it needed amending. We decided to take a risk, trying quicker methods to get the soil ready, hoping it would hold up until the end of the season when we could amend it properly. But our plant babies had other plans. Despite our quick fixes, they struggled to thrive.

It wasn’t a surprise—we know that soil is the foundation of healthy crops, contributing about 90% to their success. Without proper soil, plants can’t access the nutrients they need to grow strong and healthy. Seeing our plants fail to flourish confirmed what we already knew.

Realizing a thorough solution was necessary, we have thrown ourselves into amending the soil row by row and I’m happy to say that today, they are thriving! We transplanted our sad little plant babies into their new, nutrient-rich environment, and the difference has been incredible to witness. They’re already taking off!

Farming is about learning and adapting, and we're dedicated to giving our plants the best chance to thrive. Our goal is to grow beautiful flowers to brighten the days of our beloved seniors and healthcare workers and I’m so thankful for this community’s dedication. Without YOU and our volunteers, we couldn’t make the magic happen.

Fathers Love Bouquets Too!

Including this guy right here. At 4th Quarter Farm, we're SO proud to highlight one of our very own, Carlos. Not only is Carlos a dedicated farmer who helps bring our blooms to life, but he's also a loving father to two wonderful kids. His passion for flowers is matched only by his devotion to his family, making him an extraordinary dad and an invaluable part of our team.

This Father’s Day, consider gifting a beautiful bouquet to your father figure to show your appreciation for all the hardworking, flower-loving dads out there. Let us help you make this day extra special for them!

4th Quarter Farm is now harvesting our SIXTH season! Our mission is to grow cut flowers (and the occasional volunteer tomato and squash) on a singular acre of land for the purpose of delivering bouquets to seniors and caregivers in assisted living and hospice. The flowers change from week to week but for lonely seniors, time passes by slowly. A surprise bouquet definitely makes their day and often produces a tear or a smile, which then produces a tear or smile from us. In the last two years over 2,500 jars of flowers where placed into seniors hands, thus fulfilling our mission. What could possibly be better?!

Happy (one day late) National Bee Day! We celebrate today and every day at 4th Quarter Farm. According to the USDA, they estimate that bees pollinate approximately 75% of the flowers, fruits, nuts, and vegetables grown in the United States. Basically, one out of every 4 bites of food you consume is thanks to the hard work of bees, and every bunch of flowers you see on our page has bloomed thanks to these tiny workers. So, go out and make a bumble bee friend and remember, don't swat!
