The Palm Historic Lodge, located in Homestead, Miami, was built in 1912 for Colonel Henry Wallace Johnston, a hardware merchant from Kentucky. Initially, Johnston planted an avocado grove and experimented with various tropical fruits and flowers. Over time, the property became known for its wide array of jams, jellies, marmalades, and preserves produced from the on-site packing house and canning facility.
The lodge gained international recognition for its horticultural endeavors, attracting visitors from around the world, including botanists, doctors of philosophy, and even notable figures like Henry Ford. Today, the lodge maintains its historic charm with its Old Florida wood-frame architecture, expansive porch, high ceiling foyer, and lush gardens featuring rare botanical specimens, orchids, and a variety of tropical trees. It is now rented out for events and airbnb stays.
