I am lucky to run a business that incorporates my love of photography and video, and of course, my love of a good story.
I run the project “The Folk & The Lore,” a live storytelling event hosted by Nevada Museum of Art. The purpose of the project is to invite my fellow Reno residents to come on stage and tell a true story. We say, “When you know your neighbor’s story, you are more connected to your community.” The core belief behind this project is that the collective personal narratives of people living in one geographic location helps to build identity of place. A good story, told by someone in your community, will get retold and will become part of the growing lore of region.
My work capturing the narratives of individuals in my community, has led to longer term contracts with some Reno institutions, both young and old. I assisted Hight Desert Montessori Charter School to communicate its philosophy on ecoliteracy, peaceful education, and the values of a Montessori education.
I am currently working with Reno Rodeo to collect the oral histories and stories from 100 years of Rodeo in this community. I helped Nevada Volunteers celebrate the selfless individuals in this state that donate so much of their time and energy into making Nevada great. I have the distinct pleasure of photographing the “Young Chautauquans” that compete annually in the “Chautauqua Festival” hosted by Nevada Humanities. And finally, I have worked closely with families to capture their own legacies in cinematic form. Often, when a family member dies, there are stories that go with them. This is particularly true when that individual is an elder in our family. An “Heirloom Film” is a customized short documentary about your loved one’s stories and legacy. Recording these stories creates a link through narrative from generation to generation.
