We had a small sapling growing so close to our shed that I always meant to cut down but never got around to it. Now at 10 ft plus it has berries on it. Google Lens says mullberries. Anyone have any experience with mullberries?

"A lot of times near old farmhouses, you'll find lilac bushes, sometimes even whole rows of them. I never noticed this before I learned the reason, but now, when I see an older farmhouse, I look for them.

It's not just because they're beautiful. Back then, busy farmers wouldn't have spent much time on fancy landscaping, but lilacs were a very low maintenance and nice smelling solution to a not-so-nice smelling issue.

Before the days of indoor plumbing, which for us was around 1905, folks used outhouses. At some point, the "pile" would get to be too big. There was a hatch in the back to allow for shoveling, but eventually they would just pick up the entire outhouse and move it a short distance to a new location.

But what to do about the old spot? Cover it with dirt and plant a lilac bush! (It would certainly be well fertilized!) When you see a whole row of lilacs near old farmhouses, that's where they just kept moving the outhouse along the same line.

You'll find our beautiful, old lilac bush right near our outhouse. Most of you will never see it in bloom as it's a spring bloomer, but here it is in all its fragrant glory.
