All in all, I gotta say I'm pretty proud of all we got to do in 2024. Tired, but proud. And looking at this and seeing all the people who helped make it happen? Well, it's getting a little dusty in here. 🥲

Our partnership with the and has enabled us to increase our funds and focus on providing books in a meaningful, sustainable way.

LOOKING BACK AND FORGING AHEAD: A FOUR PART SERIES

Happy New Year! As I sat down to try to recall what the heck happened this year, it felt like 2024 was one big black hole. What did I even do? So I checked back to last year's end-of-year reflection to to remind myself of what I had wanted to accomplish. It was kind of fascinating (to me, anyway), so I thought I would share!

PART ONE: 2024 PLAN = 12 more book nooks to boost local literacy

OUR REALITY:
*ONE school book nook at Elm Park Elementary in Worcester
*our SECOND will be ready for kids at Vernon Hill Elementary when they arrive on MONDAY, January 6
*With a matching grant thanks to the , we raised OVER $6,000 for Vernon Hill and future projects
*over 7,000 new and used books collected for use the nooks
*We officially formed The Community Book Nook Initiative , our non-profit organization, and elected our first Board Members

VERDICT:
Welp, it turns out that 12 new nooks was a bit of a lofty goal. BUT, our efforts have shifted to address the more immediate and considerably more robust project of building large-scale nooks and book collections for schools without libraries.

With a non-profit structure in place, a partnership with , and more and more community involvement, we are pulling 2025 to be The Year of the Book Nook. 📚

What a way to start the new year! 🎉

Join us as we welcome local authors Josh Funk and Lisa Rogers to Hygge House Books on SATURDAY, JANUARY 11 at 11:30 AM.

It will be a morning filled with creativity, laughter, and inspiration and is best suited for ages 4+, but all are welcome!

Josh Funk is author of the belovedly hilarious LADY PANCAKE AND SIR FRENCH TOAST series and many more! Lisa Rogers specializes in picture book biographies that inspire like BEAUTIFUL NOISE: THE MUSIC OF JOHN CAGE and more!

The authors will be leading us in story time and discussion, and will also be signing books. We can't wait to see you there. ☮️❤️📚

Your $10 donation and raffle tickets will help the non-profit Community Book Nook Initiative raise money to buy books and create a cozy space to read for the kids at Vernon Hill Elementary School right here in Worcester!

Yesterday when we were at for our Holiday Book Fair, a couple approached and asked if we were doing our Book Swap again this year -- so we decided right there on the spot that YES, we are!

Join us for our version of the Icelandic holiday tradition of Jolabokaflod (pronounced yo-la-boke-uh-flowed) ~ which literally translates to Christmas Book Flood and is simply a celebration of books, storytelling, and being together. It was such a joyful time last year and we can't wait to do it again!

All you need to do to participate is:
🎁 📖 Wrap a new or (very gently) used book (1 per person) that you'd recommend to add to our book swap
❄️🧦 Don festive, comfy loungewear
🍫 🍻 Bring along a treat to share (traditionally chocolate or special beer, but whatever you wish)

Families and individuals are welcome! We'll have warm beverages for all ages available.

THIS Friday, December 13th from 6:00-8:00pm.

Last time author Jenn Bouchard visited with us, she shared about her debut novel, FIRST COURSE, and, since food-as-comfort is involved heavily in this romantic comedy, she generously gave away this awesome branded spatula to each attendee. When I tell you that this is THE best spatula I have ever encountered, I am not exaggerating. Look at that handle!

I am so thrilled to welcome Jenn back and congratulate her on her new novel, CONSIDERING US, which comes out February 6. No word yet on kitchen gadgets, but Jenn will definitely dish about this "second chance" romance and we'll chat about writing, cooking, and how she manages to do all this while raising a family AND teaching at the same time.

Progress update! We are about 30% of the way toward our GOAL of raising $3,000 to bring culturally relevant books and a cozy space in which to read them to Vernon Hill Elementary School in Worcester, MA.

Once we hit $2,700, we will receive a MATCHING DONATION thanks to the Changemakers of Central Mass Rotary Club! Our goal is to secure these funds by NOVEMBER 15 (only TWO WEEKS AWAY) -- so that we can have the BOOK NOOK up and running by the beginning of 2025.

PLEASE SHARE with your network, and if you work for a corporation that has a charitable giving or DEI group, please consider bringing this to their attention. Donations are TAX-DEDUCTIBLE thanks to our friends at the Rotary Club.
