I put some tulip bulbs in the refrigerator in December with plans to take them out in March for Easter blooms… Nature had other plans and now I have tulips blooming inside in January! I suppose I can live with that. ☺️

How did this come about?
The tulip bulbs were chilled dry in a cooler (40s for temperature) for 12-16 weeks (September through December; a crisper drawer with no moisture works well), then in December they were put in moist (not wet) soil to grow roots in the same cooler for two weeks, then taken out of the cooler when they decided to start growing up in January instead of just putting on roots! I brought them inside to 60s temperature and a window for light and two weeks later they are blooming.

Lesson for me is… check that the cooler is cold enough when they are rooting (I think it was closer to 50 than low 40s) and wait to plant the bulbs in the soil until closer to when you want them. This is a variety (“Update”) that is popular for forcing so it may have been extra ready. Other varieties may not have bloomed so quickly. In any case, it was a fun experiment and I love having the blooms in January!

Timing in theory should be:
12-16 weeks dry chill in 40s in cooler (tulips require a chill period to bloom)
2-3 weeks planted in lightly moist soil with container in cooler in 40s to put on roots
2-3 weeks by a window indoors in 60s to grow upwards and bloom!
Mimicking nature inside. Back solve to get to the time frame you want your indoor tulips! Or let nature ignore your plans and get your blooms when she’s ready. 😉
