The National Institute for Culinary and Hospitality Education (NICHE), managed by WSU Tech, is a multifaceted entity combining innovative curriculum with business operations to create synergistic learning outcomes for students and a highly skilled and passionate workforce that will not only benefit NICHE but Wichita itself. Our mission is to celebrate and enhance our culinary landscape and our fou

nding principles are sustainability, accessibility and innovation. Throughout their two-year associates program, our students receive over one thousand hours of culinary lab instruction (actual time in the kitchen). But in addition to this, all of our students have the opportunity to work in the Bistro, Food Hall, events and catering. The pressures and timing of a bustling kitchen or large-scale banquet are impossible to duplicate in a lab environment, which is why we consider this real-world experience to be essential in preparing them for the workforce. NICHE features an open to the public Food Hall as well as several rentable spaces throughout the facility including Henry's Place, the Event Center and Rooftop Terrace at NICHE.

NICHE is proud to partner with the Tallgrass Film Festival to present Let’s Talk Shop. This new film from Wichita filmmakers Sara and Charity Harmon tells the story of our city’s two biggest department stores, Innes and Henry’s.

The connection to NICHE is a special one. The historic Henry’s building in downtown Wichita, once a hub for shopping and community, is now our home filled with culinary and hospitality education, event venues, and food hall.

Join us to see how Wichita’s history continues to shape its future.

Student bio: Growing up I had Pakistani neighbors who would always give me this dish when I came over to hang out with them. I wanted to share the same experience I had growing up with other people. This dish has an array of spices including jalapenos and garam masala and it combines all of the mouthwatering flavors I experienced as a kid.
This dish is what started my passion for food and the desire to make food that people would enjoy and bring a smiles to their faces.

Student bio: I grew up eating kolaches and watching my grandmas make them, and when I
was old enough, they started to let me help mix the dough. As I grew up this was a common dish my family would eat together, and when I was in high school, and I was able to get my family’s recipe, I started making it my own.

Two pillowy bao bun tacos with soy glazed pork, crisp Asian slaw and an orange, Korean-BBQ sauce topped with micro greens and fresh cucumber slices

Student bio: This bao bun dish was born from a mix of encouragement and opportunity.
Growing up, my mom always pushed me to try new things, especially when it came to food and
stepping into unfamiliar territory. That mindset stuck with me, and it came into play during one of
our school family meals where while sampling bao, I overheard my Chef comment someone should make these as a special. I saw it as the perfect chance to take her advice to heart and challenge myself beyond the world of pastries and sweets.To make the dish truly mine, I created an orange Korean BBQ sauce inspired by my favorite
fruit, giving the tacos a sweet, tangy kick that balances the bold, savory flavors. This dish represents growth, creativity, and saying yes to the unfamiliar...all wrapped in a fluffy bao!

Student bio: The story of The Libre is Christmas barbacoa and gas station cheesesteaks;
a nod to my culture, my family, and memories through the years. In Spanish, the word “libre” means free- as in generosity. My philosophy with food has a similar meaning: if there are people around there is food to be made. My dad’s barbacoa is our Christmas turkey. Trips to Grandma’s were never complete without a stop at the gas station to get cheesesteaks, regardless of whether we needed
gas or not. I’ve combined these two dishes with the goal to represent me on a plate; my story, my culture, and my love of food.

In observance of WSU Tech all college inservice, the Food Hall at NICHE will be closed today, Friday, September 26th. The Food Hall at NICHE will reopen with regular business hours on Monday, September 29th.

Because of this unique student involved concept, The Food Hall at NICHE will follow the WSU Tech operating hours.
