Tried something new today and I’m in love! I started with an oversized teacup and filled it with zinnias, crepe myrtle blooms and allium. The finished product is this whimsical and vibrant bouquet.

Let’s talk about zinnias!
They are one of my favorite flowers for floral arrangements. The more you cut them the more flowers come. They come in a wide variety of colors, sizes and special varieties. They’re easiest actually to grow from seeds and once established are fairly drought tolerant. It’s also easy to collect the seeds from the dead flower heads so you’ll be able to keep on planting them year after year for free!
Zinnias are part of the “dirty dozen” when it comes to floral arrangements. Due to the debris they shed in the water, the water will turn dirty faster, shortening their vase life. A tip I learned from a friend was to put a drop of bleach in the vase water and that helps cut down on bacterial growth. Of course changing water in the vase often is beneficial as well.

Here’s some tips on watering your garden.
To start off, check the soil to see if you even need to water. Stick your finger in the soil up to your knuckle and if it feels dry it’s time to water.
My number one tip is to plant native and drought tolerant plants. This will cut back on the amount you need to water and the pollinators love the native plants.
Second, you’ll want to water deeply and less frequently. This helps encourage your plants to grow deeper roots.
Next you’ll want to mulch. This helps with water retention so you’ll have to water less frequently and it also helps cut down on weeds.
Always water at soil level. Drip irrigation helps with that but otherwise use a soaker hose, hose with a spray nozzle or watering can.
Lastly, if possible, water in the morning. This helps prevent fungal growth.
Hopefully these tips help you with your gardening. Right now I’m rejoicing at the rain we got this morning so I don’t have to water my garden!

Today I’m going to share some tips for starting your own flower garden affordably. It does not need to be an expensive endeavor!
Seeds are always cheaper than buying plants and some flowers grow best if you direct sow them. Zinnias are one of my favorites for my cut flower arrangements and a packet of the seeds is cheap and all you have to do is throw them in a patch of dirt, lightly cover them, water them and watch the magic happen! Once they’re established they’re pretty drought tolerant also! Other great ones to direct sow are hollyhocks, sunflowers, cosmos and cornflower.
Another way to make gardening affordable is to see if any friends have irises or other flowers they’re wanting to split. Many plants, such as irises, need to be split every few years so you’re doing your friend a favor and yourself. It’s a win win!
In that same vein, see if your friends have any extra flower seeds laying around. I collect seeds from my flowers throughout the season and then I have free seeds for the next year and normally extra to share with friends and family.
Of course, always watch for gardening stores to have sales and shop those. Sometimes a sad plant on their clearance table can be revived and you only spent a few dollars. That’s how I got my hydrangea and it is thriving! Also check out Aldi and Costco! May sound odd but that’s where I’ve found some of my favorite bulbs and roots for great prices!

Here’s some easy tips for helping your cut flowers last longer. Please feel free to share your own in the comments.
•Only have the flower’s and greenery’s stems in the water. No leaves should be touching the water.
•Change the water often. Every day is ideal but every other day is perfectly acceptable for those of us with busy lives.
•Top off the water in the vase when needed. If you don’t have time to change the water this will help a lot and takes only a few seconds.

I was gone on vacation and got back and had to make myself a fresh bouquet.
It was fun to see the new blooms that had come in while I was away but also there were lots of weeds and general maintenance. It the flowers are worth it!
