On this day in 1977, President Jimmy Carter signed into legislation the bill granting the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) full retroactive veteran status.
Although the WASP program began in 1942 and operated as part of the military until it was disbanded in 1944 with some female pilots serving all the way through 1945, the women were not recognized as veterans until Carter signed it into law in 1977.
The designation was prompted by the work of many WASP over the years, including several who testified at various hearings, and also with the support of General Hap Arnold, his son Bruce Arnold, and political help from Senator Barry Goldwater, a World War II veteran who had commanded WASP in his squadron. Their efforts were rewarded when President Jimmy Carter signed The G.I. Bill Improvement Act of 1977, granting the WASP full veteran status on November 23, 1977.
