Symphony Orchestra Featuring Dr. Timothy Jones, 7:30pm in Miller Concert Hall

Doors open at 7pm -

Seventy members comprised of undergraduate and graduate students regardless of their academic discipline perform under Dr. Mark Laycock’s direction. Recent collaborations include performances with operatic bass Samuel Ramey, jazz guitarist Pat Metheny, jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton, the classic rock band Kansas, and the arena multimedia concert Video Games Live.

Dr. Timothy Jones is an artist, teacher, and performer with roots in Kansas and branches across the Americas. He currently serves as Associate Concertmaster of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Professor of Violin at Wichita State University. He holds degrees in Music Education and Violin Performance, having received his doctorate in Performance at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil.

Jones has performed as soloist, concertmaster, and chamber musician in North and South America. He first earned a permanent position with the Wichita Symphony at age 17, and later assumed orchestral leadership roles including Principal Violin II of the San Luis Obispo Symphony (California) and Guest Concertmaster of the Newport Symphony Orchestra (Oregon). He serves as Concertmaster of the Music Theatre of Wichita and Wichita Grand Opera Orchestras.

As a chamber musician, Jones performs frequently with the Fairmount String Trio. Recent highlights for the Trio include an acclaimed performance with Rachelle Goter at the International Clarinet Association Annual Conference, and multiple presentations of Mozart and Brahms Quintets in Kansas and Iowa. As a soloist, since returning to Kansas in 2018, Jones has performed the Bach Double Concerto with the Wichita Symphony, the Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn Concertos with the Hutchinson Symphony, and the Barber Concerto with the WSU Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to his performing career, Jones is an avid educator of students of all ages, and has worked throughout his career as both private and classroom instructor. He taught strings at the middle school level in the Wichita Public Schools, and was involved with social projects in North and South America which provided music education to youth in rural communities. Additionally, he has taught and performed at music festivals in the United States, Mexico, and Brazil.

As a pedagogue, Jones takes equal pleasure in working with musical, mathematical, and esoteric knowledge. He composed a comprehensive curriculum and teaches courses in English and Portuguese regarding a postmodern knowledge known as the Law of Time, which is derived from the fractal/vigesimal mathematics of the Mayans. Jones’s contributions as both teacher and performer in the Wichita community were recognized in 2023 by the Wichita Arts Council Burton Pell Achievement in Music Award, and in 2024 by the Kansas African American Museum Doris Kerr Larkins Rising Star Award.

Ultimately, all of Jones’s work strives to demonstrate the unity of science, art, and spirituality through comprehension of number. Toward this end, he studies and teaches music, mathematics, meditation, and the psychophysiological technologies of the Law of Time — several knowledges through which disciplined humans may learn to assume responsibility as co-creators of our reality. When not playing or teaching, Jones enjoys traveling, hiking, and camping.

WSU Students can request their free student tickets in advance by going to the Fine Arts Box Office located in Duerksen Fine Arts Center during operating hours. Must show WSU student ID.

September 17th at 7:30pm in Wiedemann Hall

Dr. Jens Korndörfer is the newly appointed Associate Professor of Organ at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Praised as “a virtuoso in the grand Romantic tradition” who creates “performances that are deeply musically satisfying as well as exciting” (The American Organist), Korndörfer has performed to critical acclaim at prestigious venues such as Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, the Montreal Bach Festival, the Cathedrals in Washington, Berlin, Paris, Salzburg, Oslo, and Moscow, Westminster Abbey in London, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and the Cultural Centre in Hong Kong.

Korndörfer’s repertoire reaches from the Renaissance to the 21st century, including transcriptions, commissions, and world premieres. He frequently collaborates with other musicians, has performed with orchestras, and recorded five CDs.

Passionate about forming the next generation of organists, Korndörfer taught at Agnes Scott College (2014 – 19) and, since 2017, has been directing the successful rebuild of the organ program at Georgia State University. In combination with graduate assistantships at major churches in the Atlanta area, the comprehensive program is designed to prepare students for a successful career in church and concert.

As Director of Worship and the Arts, and Organist at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, GA, Korndörfer oversaw a thriving music and arts ministry. Under his leadership, the sanctuary organ (IV/112) was completely rebuilt, enlarged, and re-voiced by organ builders Klais (Bonn, Germany) and Schlueter (Lithonia, GA). Thanks to collaborations with major cultural players, presentations and lecture series, and the introduction of programs that raise awareness for minorities in the classical arts, Jens significantly increased the reach of the church’s music and arts ministry.

A top-honor graduate from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, the Oberlin Conservatory, the Musikhochschule in Bayreuth, and McGill University in Montreal, Korndörfer’s teachers include Olivier Latry, Michel Bouvard, James David Christie, and Ludger Lohmann.

Guest artists James Barger, Evgeny Zvonnikov, and Sarah Rushing, known collectively as TripTych, are excited to present an engaging and varied program of repertoire for the unique instrumentation of saxophone, violin, and piano. The program consists of works by 5 living composers and offers something for everyone, from the highly accessible to the more philosophical. Even lovers of French romanticism will find something to enjoy in Algerian composer, Marc Eychenne’s Cantilène et Danse – which could be best described as, “…if Fauré wrote for saxophone violin, and piano….”

Comprised of Texas A&M University faculty James Barger, Associate Professor of Saxophone; Evgeny Zvonnikov, Harrington Lecturer in Violin; and Sarah Rushing, Assistant Professor of Piano, the ensemble enjoys connecting with students and audiences through innovative programming, master classes, and workshops.
