Fun Fact Friday! Did you know tuberose only blooms at night? Due to these nocturnal blooming habits, it forced the flower to illicit a scent so strong it could be perceived by pollinating insects from far away. During the Renaissance, it was forbidden to European girls and later banned in India as well. The fear was that these flowers could inspire illicit thoughts due to the intense, almost narcotic, fragrance. The nicknames for tuberose were Queen of the Night, Mistress of the night, and Perfumery Harlot.

Fun Fact Friday! The zz plant, originally from Africa, has a very unique looking root system. Under the soil are thick potato-like roots known as rhizomes. The rhizomes store water, which is why the plant can be subjected to overwatering but can also handle droughts and places where watering isn't easy. The dark green color of their leaves means it is able to absorb light from minimum sources. Zz plants are very low maintenance and perfect for someone just starting their plant journey.

Fun Fact Friday! Did you know one of the first records of lilies dates back to the Minoan Period (around 1580 BC) when it appears in a painting found in Crete, Greece. Ancient Greeks believed lilies sprouted from the milk of Hera, Queen of the gods. Fun fact Friday! Did you know Globe Amaranth, also known as Gomphrena globosa, had been grown in Williamsburg since 1737? First grown by John Custis. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson also held this flower in high regard, so it was planted in their gardens around 1767.
