Our 25-26 Beckwith Recital Series kicks off TONIGHT with Samuel DeCaprio, cello and Barry David Salwen, piano, featuring works by Fauré, Walker, Boulanger, and Beethoven. DeCaprio is an active performer and freelancer based in the Tri-State area. He was recently awarded the Doctor of Musical arts degree from The Juilliard School together with a Norman Benzaquen Career Advancement Grant. Among his numerous honors he won the Aldo Parisot Prize at the Yale School of Music and the prestigious Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, along with top prizes from the Arlington, Eastern Connecticut Symphony, National Federation of Music Clubs, and William C. Byrd competitions.

DeCaprio collaborates with our own Barry David Salwen (Piano), an international concert pianist, who has given performances and master classes in the United States, Europe, Israel, and Asia, including two weeks of master classes at the Shanghai Conservatory in China. As the recipient of a prestigious Fulbright Scholars Grant, he gave a semester’s seminar at the Music Conservatory in Freiburg, Germany, one of the leading music institutions in the country.

📸 Beginning-of-semester photo dump! Classes are underway, and the Cultural Arts Building is alive with the sound of music. We kicked off our fall semester with our annual Ensemble Fair, followed by auditions and our New Music Student Orientation. Studios met for their first classes of the semester (peep that voice studio🎶) and we celebrated the first full week of classes with a pizza party 🍕. We cannot wait to see what this semester brings!

Welcome to our new part-time faculty! We're excited to welcome these new faces to our department.

David Hector-Hodges is an in-demand professional trombonist and private music teacher residing in North Carolina. As an orchestral musician, David has performed with ensembles such as the North Carolina Symphony, Fayetteville Symphony, and New Carolina Sinfonia, among others. He has worked with many of the world’s great conductors, including Michael Tilson-Thomas, Mei-Ann Chen, Robert Spano, Giancarlo Guerrero, Hans Graf, Thomas Wilkins, and Jahja Ling.

Tina Langevin is a soprano and vocal pedagogue specializing in both classical and contemporary commercial music (CCM). She earned her Master of Music in Voice Performance and Vocal Pedagogy from East Carolina University and her BA in Music (Voice Performance) from UNCW, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude as an Honors College Scholar with Departmental Honors in Music. Ms. Langevin has performed with North Carolina Opera in productions such as La Traviata, Ernani, and the upcoming Il Trovatore and Madama Butterfly. Her operatic roles include La Cercatrice Prima in Suor Angelica and Mary in The Ballad of Baby Doe with ECU Opera Theatre.

Brady Catlett was born in Fayetteville, NC, and earned his bachelor’s degree in Horn Performance from Brigham Young University. He went on to study with Denise Tryon at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, graduating with his master’s in 2023. He performs with ensembles across North Carolina, including the Carolina Philharmonic and the Fayetteville Symphony.

The UNCW Pop/Rock Ensembles are small instrumental and vocal ensembles performing contemporary music. The type of group depends on the availability of personnel. The Symphonic Band is an outstanding ensemble consisting of highly talented woodwind, brass and percussion players, including both music majors and non-music majors. Enrollment is open to all UNCW students with previous instrumental experience and the necessary skills to perform on a wind or percussion instrument. This ensemble rehearses three hours per week and typically performs two concerts each semester.
