Join us on Thursday, January 30th at 7:30 in Beckwith Recital Hall for our first concert of the 2025 New Music Festival. Sputter Box brings an electrifying program of music to the stage, featuring the uniquely dynamic instrumentation of bass clarinet, voice, and percussion. This show highlights seven works written specifically for Sputter Box, alongside a captivating pre-existing piece. From the bittersweet nostalgia of letting go of your past self to a hilariously chaotic soprano possessed by the ghosts of operatic composers, the program takes the audience on a journey through a wide range of emotions and stories. This performance promises to be an unforgettable evening of music that is highly entertaining.

Southern Harmonie in collaboration with the UNCW Department of Music invites you to join us for "Magic, Mischief, and Mayhem." Southern Harmonie is the Carolinas’ first professional chamber wind ensemble, founded in 2023 as a collective of UNCW faculty and guest artists from Wilmington and the surrounding region.

Southern Harmonie's January 2025 program, entitled “Magic, Mischief, and Mayhem,” blends familiar classics with new favorites: the fantastical Finale from Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream; Arturo Márquez's Octeto Malandro ("Misbehaving Octet"); Bohuslav Martinu's La R***e de Cuisine, a farcical ballet about the romantic entanglements of enchanted kitchen utensils; Sarah Kirkland Snider's O Sweet and Beloved Mother, inspired by the medieval troublemaker Hildegard of Bingen; Jeff Scott's "Isis" from Sacred Women, honoring the Egyptian goddess's magical powers; a suite from Orff's subversive Carmina Burana; and the frenzied "Champagne Aria" from Mozart's Don Giovanni.

Part of the 13th Annual UNCW Annual Honor Band Festival, Shared Spaces will be the final concert of the semester for the UNCW Symphonic Band. We are excited to share the stage with Mitch Hebert and the UNCW Percussion Ensemble – performing on the first half of the program. The second half of the concert will feature the UNCW Faculty Brass Quintet in a performance of a Suite from Leonard Bernstein’s MASS. Viet Cuong’s Shared Spaces is a hypnotic and meditative work that deals with loss and collective healing – you must experience it in person! The concert will close with a consortium premiere of Gala Flagello’s Love & Nature, conducted by our guest conductor for this concert and the Honor Band Festival, Dr. Kimberly Fleming. This concert is FREE to the public. We hope you can make it for our final performance of the semester!
