This is an Osage orange. This time of year there is an abundance of them falling from a tree that hangs over the area alongside the Abbey Nature Trail near our large chicken coop and the home of two our pigs, Lilly and Mr. Wiggles. If you have every picked up the Osage orange, you know it has the density of a large baseball. Currently there is a plethora of them on the ground. Saturday afternoon, a group of teenagers were throwing them at the pigs, until they were asked to refrain (luckily by a volunteer that happened to be on property feeding).

SERIOUSLY?!!? Teenager or not - what type of person finds entertainment in that? I can tell you I have ZERO TOLERANCE for it . If you should witness something like this with regard to the Animals at The Stables, please intervene or contact the Stables and we certainly will address the situation or those involved.

We want for people to be able to see many of the animals and enjoy them while walking the trail, but if behavior such as this continues ( as this is not the first time), adjustments will be made to protect the animals.

Sarah Eleanora (Nora) Dozier Foy, (1850-1923), wife of Joseph Thompson Foy, son of Joseph Mumford Foy and Mary Ann Simmons Foy. At 4’11″, Nora was issued a single shot 22 for protection and also served as postmistress following in the Foy family footsteps. Nora continued to make sure the manor house at Poplar Grove continued to be a gathering place for entertainment and she lives long enough to see women get the vote in 1920. She is from Marion County, South Carolina, within the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, and her attitudes and practices regarding the tenant families of the formerly enslaved are aligned with the Foy family’s long-held traditions. Mary Jane Hines (1872-1942), daughter of the formerly enslaved Mary Douglas and Reuben Hines of Poplar Grove. She runs the household at Poplar Grove under the supervision of Nora Dozier Foy. She was the main cook and famous for her Hoppin’ John, and homemade biscuits, molasses and butter. Evidence of her Gullah Geechee culture is clearly visible in the distinctive arts, crafts, cuisine, and music, as well as language. Her culture is embodied in diverse patterns of social organization reflecting the intimate and private ways communities and families meet the challenges of life. There is so much more to learn about the Gullah Geechee culture at Poplar Grove Plantation. Be sure to visit them and get a tour of the house and grounds. Come see us!

Cooler weather has us dreaming of Christmas morning. No need to wait until Christmas to experience the magic of the season! Join us for a step back in time on a Candlelight Tour of the antebellum Manor House. Inhale the fresh evergreen, orange, cloves, and cinnamon. Come into the parlors for views of two 12-foot trees embellished with Victorian ornaments. Listen to Christmas stories of the past, and remember your own favorite memories as you move through each room of our home. Step onto the upper deck of our porches to view the lighted grounds. Sip wassail and eggnog as you enjoy light conversation. It all starts this weekend, so gather loved ones and purchase tickets to our Candlelight Tours: http://www.poplargrove.org/festivals/amerrylittlechristmas/candlelight-tours/.
