Happy belated feast day of St. Cecilia (Nov 22)! If you are stressing about your wedding Mass music and what to choose, perhaps you could pray for the intercession of St. Cecilia! Patroness of music. 🎶🎻

St. Cecilia is the patroness of musicians and Church music because, as she was dying, she sang to God. It is also written that as the musicians played at her wedding she ‘sang in her heart to the Lord’.

Happy belated feast day of St. Margaret of Scotland! She is the basis of our today. St. Margaret truly loved serving God and fasted often, fed orphans and the poor, and washed the feet of beggars on her way home. In the spirit of service, one idea for your wedding day is to incorporate a foot washing ceremony! Perhaps during the reception as a surprise for the bride or groom. Or maybe you and your fiancé could volunteer at a local shelter or food bank as a weekend activity to spend time together in service of others in the weeks leading up to the wedding! Scottish shortbread as wedding favors would be so sweet. If your groom is of Scottish descent, perhaps look into renting or buying a kilt for the occasion! Or hiring a bagpiper for your walk down the aisle. (I personally did this and it was amazing! The song was Highland Cathedral.) If you want to really shake things up, you can get all of your groomsmen to wear either their clan kilt or a generic one! (My husband did this!) It makes for fun pictures ;) Happy Saturday!

My family and I are back from Portugal but I can't stop thinking about all the beautiful sights we were able to see while there. I did not know that the incorrupt body of St. Isabel (Elizabeth) of Portugal lay in the city of Coimbra! My family and I were hiking one afternoon and we were told the monastery at the top of the hill offered a beautiful look out spot. I believe we went to the incorrect spot because we ended up at this gorgeous, gilded church and I noticed the tomb behind a statue of St. Isabel. (For context, the entire city has her everywhere-- from wall tiles outside homes to an annual party in her honor by the students of the university.) How did it never occur to me that her body would lay to rest there too? To stumble upon such a heavenly sight was truly extraordinary.

This Sunday, we celebrate (early) the feast day of St. Elizabeth of Hungary! St. Elizabeth is a wonderful saint to go to for her intercession in your engagement and future marriage because among her patronages are “against in-law problems” and “brides”! Fun fact that I only recently learned myself: She is the aunt of St. Elizabeth (Isabel) of Portugal! And they both had the same miracle happen to them – the items in their cloaks presented a vision of roses when they were questioned by their husbands (also both kings).

This inspires one of my ideas for this morning’s : Since both Elizabeths had been taking bread to the poor when she was questioned, maybe you could hand-bake small loaves of bread for all guests to show them gratitude and love for their support? Perhaps some bridesmaids could help with this task. Or simply a table with some hand-baked small sourdough loaves. Have a “breaking of bread” at your wedding where the loaves are prayed over and then broken and distributed by you and your fiance! To do this on a smaller scale, have dinner with your parents, in-laws, and fiance sometime before the wedding and break bread with your priest who will marry you! It would be a lovely way to welcome in the wedding festivities with peace and love among the merging families. Additionally, you can use bread to inspire your wedding gift to the couple! Maybe a beautiful basket with a hand-made bread loaf, some lovely red wine, and a gift card!

Another thing I learned about while researching for this post was “Name Day prayers.” (See here at: https://www.catholicculture[.org]/culture/liturgicalyear/activities/view.cfm?id=1199.) According to the Catholic Culture blog, Elizabeth of Hungary is the patroness of the names: Bette, Beth, Eliza, Eiles, Isabel, Ishbel, Elsie, Bessie, Bettina, Elise, and Ilse. If your name or a friend’s name (who is about to be married) falls in this list, you can do a name day prayer for them or yourself on Nov 17! Elizabeth is such a wonderful name … you have St. Elizabeth of Hungary, St. Elizabeth of Portugal, and St. Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist! Ask them all to intercede for your wedding day.

Finally, one of St. Elizabeth’s patronages is also lace. So you could get a personalized, embroidered lace handkerchief for your future mother-in-law! Or have a rose infused dessert, like this rose panna cotta with raspberries. Maybe some rose apple tarts as an appetizer? Definitely include as many roses as possible into décor or your own bouquet!

Earlier in the week, St. Elizabeth (cousin to Mama Mary) provided our weekly Saintspiration themed event. She worried she would never have a child, and lo and behold -- her son would be none other than John the Baptist. Marriage, intimacy, pregnancy... it can all be so overwhelming! Many newly married Catholic couples are trying to learn about one another and also potentially learning how to honor God's design for marriage through the methods of Natural Family Planning. If you're going through these challenges and feeling hopeless, this wonderful article by Natural Womanhood has testaments from couples who have practiced NFP for 20-30 years and how it's enriched their marriages!

In his book, Further Along the Road Less Traveled, Dr. Scott Peck describes how, on the first day of his honeymoon, all the romantic feelings he’d had for

Today we are doing things a little differently again! The for today is St. Elizabeth, cousin of Mama Mary, and mother of John the Baptist!

Seeing as how she was the mother of John the Baptist, I thought a baptism inspired by St. Elizabeth would be appropriate!

I love the image of St. Elizabeth and Mama Mary from scripture: "And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit." Whether your baby to be baptized was long awaited for nine months of pregnancy or arrived after years of attempting to have a child (as was the case with Elizabeth) -- all babies are, in some shape or form, long awaited!

So here are my ideas for a long awaited baby's baptism day:
1. Since St. John the Baptist was in the desert wearing camel hair and a belt of leather, I think these personalized leather baby booties from Etsy seller "SoftSoulBabyShoes" would be absolutely precious.
2. St. John the Baptist also had a diet of locusts and honey, so honey jars as a favor (or honey infused desserts like baklava) would be the way to go. If you really wanted to go wild, they do sell grasshopper and cricket candies as party favors but that's not really a snack I'd go for right off the bat! 😅
3. I adore this image of Mama Mary and St. Elizabeth. Many Catholic makers on Etsy have this print available for purchase. I love the joy and friendship felt in the image. This would make for a beautiful "push present" for a fellow mama friend expecting a little one!

That's all I have for you today -- short and sweet. To read more, I highly suggest this interesting article from the "Saints, Feast, Family" blog: https://www.saintsfeastfamily.com/copy-of-elizabeth-mother-john-de-ba

Today, I just HAD to share this gorgeous online shop with you today! "Catholic Wedding Essentials" specializes in custom designed wedding stationary, favors, and more! I am especially in love with this traditional and elegant wedding invitation!

From the owner:

"In a fast-paced world where traditions often take a back seat to modern trends, I sensed a great need amongst Catholics to bring back the timeless beauty and profound significance inherent in traditional Catholic art. Fueled by a love for the Catholic Faith and a desire to share it with others I began my journey in 2016 of designing cards, invitations, and gifts with beautiful Catholic designs in the 'Shower of Roses Shoppe.' My wedding collections had grown and become so popular that it was necessary to open a shop especially for the Catholic bride and groom. 'Catholic Wedding Essentials' offers a large selection of Catholic wedding and shower invitations, save the date, RSVPs, wedding prayer cards, favors, and much more. Every item is easy to customize and free shipping is offered at checkout. It is my hope that by incorporating the beauty of the Catholic Faith into your special day, you will experience the joy in sharing the love of your faith with those dearest to you."

Today also happens to be the owner's wedding anniversary! Happy Anniversary and hope God blesses you for countless years to come!

It's here! It's here! The Solemnity of All Saints!!! Today is a FANTASTIC day to think about (with your fiancé or spouse) what saint you might like to ask for intercession on your engagement journey, marriage, or pregnancy/parenthood journey. Which saint's life inspires you and moves your heart? This may be something to contemplate today.

Did you know pretzels are a commemorative food for All Saints' Day? According to "The Catholic Home" by Meredith Gould: "Usually regarded as a traditional food for Lent, in some Eastern European countries, pretzel making is also an All Saints' Day ritual. The dough for these pretzels is shaped into a figure eight, to represent saints or martyrs."

That is super cool! If you are having a baby shower, bridal shower, or any other gathering today -- be sure to bring along some big soft pretzels!

Other on this All Saints' Day would be to pray the Litany of the Saints (heck you could even ask for it to be sung as pre-wedding Mass music while guests enter the church) or to meditate on any saints you are named after, unknown saints who may even be part of your family, or your confirmation saints. Ask them to pray for you for whatever event you are preparing for!

I also LOVE these products by Etsy seller "JanuaryJaneShop." She has vintage polaroid picture sets of the saints. There is a motherhood set, mini polaroids, or a full set of saints. Imagine these on a display at your event with some saintly quotes!

So, I am SUPER DUPER excited for today's theme because not only was it the very first one I ever thought of when I was envisioning topics for this series but also ... I have a bridal client for next fall who is doing something similar and so I will get to see this theme come to life!

Calling all my Catholic goth girlies because ... **drum roll ** ... our theme is MEMENTO MORI (Remember your death) and TIL DEATH DO US PART! First things first, look at the vast array of products we can enjoy from all the gifted and amazing Catholic makers we have on Etsy! I love the idea of a memento mori rosary -- can you imagine it wrapped around a bouquet of red roses? Divine. I also loved these skeleton earrings because they double as diffusers! Get yourself some frankincense or myrrh essential oil for a holy reminder of how we will all turn to dust one day -- but that also doubles as cute jewelry! 😂

Second, you can pretty much utilize any number of "skulls in love" type décor for a Memento Mori/Til Death Do Us Part wedding. I found these "Until Death" invites by Katie Zimpel on Minted[.com]. Michaels CURRENTLY -- yep, right now! -- has an array of wedding/love skull décor that is so cute! From skeleton hands making hearts or signing "I love you" in ASL to skulls hugging with cute sayings like "Love Never Dies", etc. You can also incorporate some subtle lace skeletons into your wedding mantilla or onto your dress!

Per the Catholic Culture Liturgical Year blog, "Halloween or All Hallows' Eve is not a liturgical feast on the Catholic calendar, but the celebration has deep ties to the Liturgical Year. The three consecutive days -- Halloween, All Saints Day and All Souls Day -- illustrate the Communion of Saints. We, the Church Militant (those on earth, striving to get to heaven) pray for the Church Suffering (those souls in Purgatory) especially on All Souls Day and the month of November. We rejoice and honor the Church Triumphant (the saints, canonized and uncanonized) in heaven. We also ask the Saints' intercession for us."

Some spiritual & spooky ways to incorporate on our faith into your nuptials: maybe plan a honeymoon trip to Evora, Portugal! Nothing else will quite so strongly remind you of your impending death someday as the Chapel of Bones or Capela dos Ossos. It was built by Franciscan friars out of about 5,000 exhumed corpses from ordinary people who were buried in Evora's medieval cemeteries. On the wall is a poem in Portuguese which, translated by Father Carlos A. Martins, reads:

"Where are you going in such a hurry, traveler?
Pause...do not advance your travel.
You have no greater concern than this one:
That which is now before your eyes.
Recall how many have passed from this world,
Reflect on your similar end.
There is good reason to do so;
If only all did the same.
Ponder, you so influenced by fate,
Among the many concerns of the world,
So little do you reflect on death.
If by chance you glance at this place,
Stop ... for the sake of your journey,
The longer you pause, the further on your journey you will be."

Another idea would be to let the kids attending your wedding reception (or adults!) dress up as their favorite saint! You can also serve hot apple cider with dehydrated apple skulls. OR if you want to get super creative -- have a special reception cocktail called the "Holy Ghost." It could either be white or flaming as both are symbols of the Holy Spirit!

I will forever adore the small but awe-inspiring church in my father's hometown here in Portugal. Coming here has always evoked a sense of hope and peace in my life. Some quotations from St. John Paul II come to mind ...

“I plead with you -- never, ever give up on hope, never doubt, never tire, and never become discouraged. Be not afraid.”

“The cross means there is no shipwreck without hope; there is no dark without dawn; nor storm without haven.”

“Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song.”

Here's hoping that your day was/is full of hope, and all the days to come too!

Surprise! I'm in Portugal with my family! And of course, visiting the Eucharistic miracle in Santarém was obviously on the top of my visit list!

The Church of Saint Stephen, now called “The Miracle Church” (Santuário do Santíssimo Milagre), is the home of a Eucharistic miracle that occured in the year 1247. Many have come to this church to venerate the relic, which is a communion host with the live blood of Christ (yep, it's live blood and changes in volume through the seasons just like our blood would). It was scientifically analyzed and found to match the blood on the Shroud of Turin!

It was a blessing to witness this Eucharistic miracle which has also been visited by Blessed Carlo Acutis and even Queen St. Isabel of Portugal!

Our two days ago was St. John Paul II and I introduced some of the amazing resources that have stemmed from his teachings on Theology of the Body. Well, I never realized that Theology of the Body teachings could also apply to helping our body image too!

In the book "See Yourself as God Does: Understanding Holy Body Image Through Catholic Scripture" by Shannon Whitmore, Catholic women will discover their identity as a masterpiece of God and how to build holy body image as a Catholic. The message in this book is succinct, straightforward, and a tangible read for a busy woman/wife/mother. There are reflection questions at the end of every chapter as well as separate exercises created by a psychologist.

The book thoroughly addresses all the things I struggled with body image -- identifying the true cause, rediscovering the sacrament of our bodies, working through motherhood issues, identifying and healing brokenness, letting go of shame, perfectionism, everything!

I love this interview that Shannon did about her book on Stacey Sumereau's podcast "Called and Caffeinated" (which, by the way, you should totally follow on YouTube)! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dImUc9MCukM&ab_channel=StaceySumereau

10/22/2023

This Sunday marks the feast day of Saint John Paul II! St. JPII is one of the most influential saints for me personally (and my family) and I attribute a lot of my growth in the faith to teachings and inspiration from this sweet saint.

My grandmother was fortunate enough to have met him and I have a rosary blessed by him amongst my treasured possessions. I also have a hilarious story for my young daughter someday about the time when she was a baby and a traveling 1st class relic of JPII came to our church; the sister who was helping visitors touch items to the relic to be blessed scooped her up and swiped her ON the relic like she was a butternut squash at the grocery checkout! It was hilarious.

But enough of my personal anecdotes! This week's is more focused on the wealth of resources found in our faith to prepare you and your beloved's hearts for marriage!

First and foremost, the book "Love and Responsibility" from St. JPII provides many insights about love, marriage, and intimacy. If you are short on time before your nuptials, the book "Men, Women, and the Mystery of Love" is basically the condensed insights from the book.

St. JPII was the most traveled pope in history, so perhaps a pilgrimage would be the perfect way to take inspiration from this saint in preparation for marriage! JPII began the World Youth Day meetings and, although the most recent meeting just took place in Lisbon, Portugal, the next one will be in South Korea in 2027!

If you can't make it to South Korea, might I suggest a pilgrimage to Fatima, Portugal? According to CatholicSaints[.info], "On 13 May 1983 he went to Fatima to consecrate the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He later repeated the consecration of the world to Mary in union with all the Bishops of the Catholic Church, in fulfillment of Our Lady‘s promises at Fatima." If you can't make it to Fatima, perhaps you and your fiancé can consecrate yourselves to Mary! I highly recommend the "33 Days to Morning Glory" book and workbook! JPII is one of the 4 persons discussed in the book as a point of reflection! For almost an entire week out of the 33 days! You can learn all about his deep love for Mary.

Finally, not only did JPII come into play with my culture (since I am Portuguese and Fatima holds a special place in my heart) but there just so happened to be a JPII Healing Center back in Tallahassee, FL where my husband and I moved from. Bob Schuchts is the founder of the center and has written some fantastic books to help with anything from forming a deeper and more loving bond with your spouse to healing from past sexual wounds. The center frequently does retreats and such -- I've personally attended the Undoer of Knots retreat and it was amazing!

If you were missing having a recipe or meal idea in this Saintspiration, Pope JPII once said that this cake was his absolute favorite: https://catholiccuisine[.blogspot][.com]/2011/04/kremowka-papieska-papal-cream-cake[.html] (copycat recipe from Catholic Cuisine)!

Happy feast day of Blessed Charles of Austria! Most saints' feast days are based on their date of death, as this was the day that marked their entrance into heaven. Blessed Charles of Austria's feast day is his wedding anniversary -- October 21! I love this article which shares 5 saintly pieces of advice from Blessed Charles. Apparently, the night before their wedding, he told his wife-to-be, Zita, "Now let’s help each other get into heaven."

Can you imagine hearing that sweet sentiment from the love of your life the night before your wedding? No wonder he made it to heaven!

There's a reason why the Church chose the date of their wedding to be Bl. Charles' feast day

This quote comes from St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, whose feast day was the 16th of this week. I love the emphasis on peace and not letting yourself get caught up in anything you might want to change in yourself. To get worked up about an area of progress is living in the space of the evil one who wants you to be discouraged and dislike yourself. Never forget you're fearfully and wonderfully made, and is not the same as hating on yourself! Pray for continued grace & peace. ;)

10/15/2023

This Sunday, I present to you the "I Do ... BBQ!" wedding reception theme that I think St. Luke would totally approve of were he alive today. If you love red meat, art, and brewed beer then this is the one for you!

First and foremost, according to CatholicCulture[.org], among St. Luke's patronages is "artists, bachelors, brewers, butchers, glass makers, glassworkers, goldsmiths, lace makers, lace workers, painters, stained glass workers, and unmarried men." If you, dear reader, are a bride-to-be then you should definitely begin praying for the intercession of St. Luke in your fiancé's day to day! Additionally, some of the symbols of St. Luke include the winged ox or calf, palette and brushes, easel, book and pen.

For this reason, beef (or if you want to be bold, ox!) would be a great way to pay homage to St. Luke and to our Catholic traditions and heritage at your wedding reception! You could have a tray of steak medallions or a meat carving station. A cute little brewery truck or a keg from a local brewery would be a must. You could even have Italian wedding soup with beef meatballs. I love catholiccuisine[.blogspot][.com] because they give a lot of history behind every recipe. Apparently, penne pasta is sometimes referred to as "quill" or "feather" pasta for it's shape. So soup using penne pasta would pay tribute to St. Luke's pen!

Another food idea would be having a charcuterie appetizer! One of the foods associated with this feast day are Banbury Cakes in England, which include dried raisins or figs, so you'd have to include lots of dried fruits and figs on your board!

Moving on to special touches, décor, and so forth... According to the book "Dining with the Saints," St. Luke was a disciple of St. Paul and, it is believed, a confidant for Our Lady and her physician! This may be why his gospel includes stories of Christ's childhood. I think it would be totally appropriate to bring in a slideshow of the wedding couple or table centerpieces with pictures of the couple at age 1 for Table 1, age 2 for Table 2, etc. Considering his patronage of lace makers and some of his symbols being a book and pen, any kind of books over a lace table runner or something would be totally appropriate! Perhaps you could hire a calligrapher to design the invites or dinner place cards.

As for other artistic ideas, I love the idea of a stained glass cake! Or maybe a watercolor one if you prefer painting to stained glass making. A gift idea would be an heirloom stained glass decoration with the married couple's last name. You could also host your reception at an art museum or take pictures in a beautiful location with frescoes all along the ceiling. I could also totally see a live wedding painter or a painting themed guest book!

Finally, there are some truly beautiful icons of St. Luke painting what is believed to be the first real icon of Mama Mary and Christ as a child. Imagine that image with a gold frame, surrounded by some scripture from the Gospel of Luke on a table in the center of your reception... asking friends and family to pray for you through the intercession of St. Luke! That would be truly inspiring. I also suggest gifting a couple an icon of Mama Mary and Jesus-- just beware as there are people selling icons with hidden, anti-Christian imagery!

It may be "Friday the 13th" but we have no fear, Mama Mary is here!

Today is Oct 13, and in 1917 (106 years ago), this date marked the sixth apparition of Our Lady of Fatima to the three children in Cova da Iria, Portugal. During this apparition, an estimated 70,000 people saw the "Miracle of the Sun." Summing up various accounts of this spectacle, the sun looked like a "dull silver disc" with a sheen like "mother of pearl." You could look at the sun comfortably without it hurting your eyes. Suddenly, the sun appeared to "dance" in the sky and it moved around in various patterns until it suddenly seemed to "detach itself from the sky" and seemingly appear it was on its way to crush the crowd. A great multitude of people screamed in terror. What a story, huh?

If you haven't seen the movie that was released in 2020 -- I highly recommend you rent it this evening and check it out! Stop by Trader Joe's for some Portuguese "vinho verde" (green wine) to accompany it!

(As usual, images are from Google and I do not claim them as my own.)
