This Sunday, I present to you the "I Do ... BBQ!" wedding reception theme that I think St. Luke would totally approve of were he alive today. If you love red meat, art, and brewed beer then this is the one for you!
First and foremost, according to CatholicCulture[.org], among St. Luke's patronages is "artists, bachelors, brewers, butchers, glass makers, glassworkers, goldsmiths, lace makers, lace workers, painters, stained glass workers, and unmarried men." If you, dear reader, are a bride-to-be then you should definitely begin praying for the intercession of St. Luke in your fiancé's day to day! Additionally, some of the symbols of St. Luke include the winged ox or calf, palette and brushes, easel, book and pen.
For this reason, beef (or if you want to be bold, ox!) would be a great way to pay homage to St. Luke and to our Catholic traditions and heritage at your wedding reception! You could have a tray of steak medallions or a meat carving station. A cute little brewery truck or a keg from a local brewery would be a must. You could even have Italian wedding soup with beef meatballs. I love catholiccuisine[.blogspot][.com] because they give a lot of history behind every recipe. Apparently, penne pasta is sometimes referred to as "quill" or "feather" pasta for it's shape. So soup using penne pasta would pay tribute to St. Luke's pen!
Another food idea would be having a charcuterie appetizer! One of the foods associated with this feast day are Banbury Cakes in England, which include dried raisins or figs, so you'd have to include lots of dried fruits and figs on your board!
Moving on to special touches, décor, and so forth... According to the book "Dining with the Saints," St. Luke was a disciple of St. Paul and, it is believed, a confidant for Our Lady and her physician! This may be why his gospel includes stories of Christ's childhood. I think it would be totally appropriate to bring in a slideshow of the wedding couple or table centerpieces with pictures of the couple at age 1 for Table 1, age 2 for Table 2, etc. Considering his patronage of lace makers and some of his symbols being a book and pen, any kind of books over a lace table runner or something would be totally appropriate! Perhaps you could hire a calligrapher to design the invites or dinner place cards.
As for other artistic ideas, I love the idea of a stained glass cake! Or maybe a watercolor one if you prefer painting to stained glass making. A gift idea would be an heirloom stained glass decoration with the married couple's last name. You could also host your reception at an art museum or take pictures in a beautiful location with frescoes all along the ceiling. I could also totally see a live wedding painter or a painting themed guest book!
Finally, there are some truly beautiful icons of St. Luke painting what is believed to be the first real icon of Mama Mary and Christ as a child. Imagine that image with a gold frame, surrounded by some scripture from the Gospel of Luke on a table in the center of your reception... asking friends and family to pray for you through the intercession of St. Luke! That would be truly inspiring. I also suggest gifting a couple an icon of Mama Mary and Jesus-- just beware as there are people selling icons with hidden, anti-Christian imagery!
