Take a journey back in time to when the Garden City Garage stood proudly on North Main Street, just north of the historic Shelby Hotel in Winter Garden. 🏙️
The garage was later run by A.P. Swaidmark, though it was originally constructed by Winter Garden pioneer James Lafayette Dillard. Fun fact: The building also housed meetings for the Florida National Guard Armory!

In the background, you can spot other iconic landmarks like the 1906 Atlantic Coast Line railroad depot, the 1912 Bank of Winter Garden, and the two-story Dillard and Boyd building. And don’t forget the Shelby Hotel (1913), standing tall on the corner of Plant and Main Streets.

Some distressing news about the Garden Theatre closing for good, due in large part to state budget cuts to the Arts. Like many arts organizations, the Garden relies on grants to abet its support by the City, that actually owns and maintains the venerable building.

And creatives operate it.

It was constructed in 1935 to replace the theater at its immediate east, that burned in 1934. In fact, Pilar’s facade mimics the entryway of that original Garden Theatre.

It closed in 1963 and served as a warehouse for Pounds Motors, on its west side. It reopened in 2008 after an ambitious rehabilitation spearheaded by the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation in a capital campaign led in large part by Barbara Roper.

This is distressing, outrageous, and astonishing. The arts nurture a community… and they challenge a community, and they offer varying perspectives on this thing called LIFE. Today’s Garden Theatre is a forum.

We are not happy about this. Not at all.
