Girls 1600 relay placed 8th. We had them run it as a workout about a month ago and they weren't happy about it. We decided to run it again as a workout a couple weeks later and they weren't happy about it but took 12 seconds off their time. So to make finals and to place is pretty darn impressive. Final race of the 2024 season was run by Lilly Barfuss, Keelie Kuil, Kylie Sachtjen, and Livvy Audiss.

What is the definition of a “legend?” Well, let me tell you a love story… Coach Naasz was a man, who was all about preparation, ex*****on, motivation, and expectation.

We prepared for our opponents like no others. We knew exactly what was going to be ‘thrown’ at us. Nothing was unknown; you may get lucky and out execute us occasionally, but you were never going to surprise the Warriors. Countless opponents of Coach Naasz’s teams were stifled by the Warriors because of our understanding of YOUR team. His teams were a direct reflection of his soul. The man prepared like no other. You could see in his mannerisms each game week he was terrified he wasn’t going to give us every tool to be successful…. he was afraid to fail the Winner Warriors. He was even preparing during the game. How many times did we catch “Fooda” pulling grass and tossing it into the air during the game? Not even Mother Nature was going to fool him or the Warriors.

Come Tuesday, Coach had outlined the game plan and we would go to work…. “Run it again!” “We’re going to run it again, and again until we get it right!” Come Friday night there was no thinking… it was simply recognization, immediate adjustment if needed, and blow the damn whistle so we could play ball. The schedule was August through November… but football season is year around in Winner. Don’t get me wrong, we all play other sports and find success, but the weight room was our off-season, and track was HUGE to coach. It was part of our preparation and ex*****on for success.

Expectations… this is where he set us apart from many, many others. I mentioned earlier “Fooda”… he was the Football god in our eyes. We knew he had given EVERYTHING he had to be ready for that next opponent… information, offensive and defensive sets, tendencies, etc… and he expected us to use it and go out and execute. He also let us know we could trust the man next to us to be ready for game time, and we needed to execute for our teammates. Not 100 percent but 105 percent. He wanted just a little bit more! And that’s how he/we rolled. If you were a backup he expected you to push yourself to the next level. Never settle for your role. Steel sharpens steel. Go earn the spot. Next man up. All very understood by Warriors… nothing given; everything earned! I was terrified to fail my Coach and my teammates, knowing how much sweat, blood, and stress he and you had put into the week.

Oh, and could Coach Naasz motivate. During our week of preparations, he let us know every single one of our opponents were trying to outwork us! Coach let us know that YOUR State Championship game was this Friday night versus the Warriors. And when game time finally arrived he would let us know pregame “You are ready!” I’m sorry for all of you at this point we would have “run through brick walls” for Coach Naasz and each other.

But it’s only with the passing of time, and conversations with Coach since, that I realized this was all just a game and part of a bigger picture! Yes, he wanted to be successful as a football coach…. But he knew the game of football would end for nearly all of us. Coach took as much pride in the tools he was giving to his young Warriors to win in LIFE. In my adult life he was still “Coach.”… and I could see he expects all Winner Warriors to be prepared in each of our own individual adventures and to go execute!

RIP Coach Naasz. He so loved the Warriors, that he BECAME the Warrior. You prepared us well; we got this for you from here on out. See you at the goal line!

Love,
The Winner Warriors
