Under the direction of Resident Composer David Serkin Ludwig, the Young Composers Seminar brings together a group of already-accomplished young composers who each create a new work for the Festival. These pieces can be heard for the very first time performed by Festival artists at the Sounding Board workshop on Tuesday, August 20. Get an inside glimpse into the recording process at the second Sounding Board on Wednesday, August 21. This year’s Young Composers are Jonah Cohen, Delifin Demiray, and Yuri Lee.

The Young Artists Program is an opportunity for young musicians to be in residence during the festival and to return during the following academic year for performances and community workshops. For this program, we select young professionals who will be the next generation of artistic leaders. During the festival, these musicians work on classic chamber repertoire in public coaching by master teachers and perform the pieces at week’s end. Audience members get an in-depth look at the works and experience the excitement of
mentorship.

This year’s Young Artist Quartet: Hannah Chaewon Kim, violin; Jusun Kim, violin; Sam Rosenthal, viola; and Nagyeom Jang, cello.

They will perform at two public masterclasses on Monday, August 19, and Wednesday, August 21. They will present a final Showcase Concert on Saturday, August 24.

Our special festival-opening presentation on Saturday, August 17th, will be given by a person who has been at the heart of the LCCMF community: Jin Kim, father of Artistic Director Soovin Kim. From his perspective of being an immigrant to the United States, Jin will share personal stories about how Korean folk traditions and intercultural communication have shaped the experience of his children, grandchildren, and American popular culture.

We hope you will join us for this special presentation. Find out more and purchase tickets at lccmf.org!

Our 2024 Festival concludes on Sunday, August 25, with a celebration of Parisian and African cultures.

The finale of FOLKLORE includes masterpieces from two French composers, Ravel and Fauré, who drew heavily on the sounds of their country, as well as from Nigerian composer Christian Onyeji, who adapts African musical techniques into works that explore themes of identity, indigenous culture, and artistic freedom. Ravel’s Chanson Madécasses set the poetry of French writer Evariste de Parny, who wrote about the people and landscapes of Madagascar.
