Today, we honor and remember Lawrence Joel, a true American hero from Winston-Salem. In 1969, he became the first African-American recipient of the Medal of Honor since the Spanish-American War, awarded for his extraordinary bravery during a firefight in Vietnam. President Lyndon B. Johnson presented him with the Medal for his selfless actions, which saved the lives of countless soldiers under heavy enemy fire.

On this Veterans Day, we salute Lawrence Joel and all veterans who have served with valor and sacrifice. Your courage and dedication inspire us every day.
