Our Paul Creighton was honored to curate and moderate two educational sessions at last week's Int’l Entertainment Buyers Assn IEBA in Nashville.

The first session was titled “Getting To Yes” a panel discussion that featured two corporate buyers as well as agents from William Morris and CAA on how to write offers that give you the best opportunity for success. That was followed by a discussion that featured Tour Managers from Dan+Shay, Train, and Kenny Loggins on “Best Practices in Advancing Corporate Shows”.

Continuing education is the lifeblood of our industry!

As entertainment producers for corporate events, we often cannot put our favorite bookings or custom productions out in public view but we love being able to take advantage of the great locations our clients choose. Last week, Paul not only caught a Cubs game and also a Bears game while in his hometown of Chicago but also had one of many early morning pre-event walks in Las Vegas. We love this business!

Last week we lost a great friend and member of the T. Skorman family. Key Howard’s decision back in 1987 to move to Orlando with his wife Susan and join forces with his friend Ted Skorman created our brand-new Conventions & Special Events division. Key came to us with an incredible career in entertainment, serving as an award-winning musical director, writer, arranger and performer, working with many celebrities including Bob Hope and Don Rickles. Before joining us Key had also been director of Entertainment for a large hotel chain. After his retirement from T. Skorman, Key became even busier, creating his own show “Ain’t Life Grand”, appearing locally in stage productions, in movies and was interviewed on Bolder. Key we will miss your wit, your stories and your love of life.

Ted and Connie share some personal memories of Key below.

Ted
Key was the ultimate professional in the way he acted, dressed and spoke to people. His sense of humor was front and center as he loved to tell a good joke. He wanted to make people feel good and laugh.

One of my fondest memories was the wall of fame pictures he had in his office with all the stars he worked with. One of the pictures was him, Jim Nabors from the Andy Griffin show and a 3rd person not of national fame. When I saw it for the first time, I commented on how much I liked the picture. He got a big smile on his face like a little kid and said “yea, you really like Jim Nabors?” I said “No, I'm referring to the other guy in the photo. The one who wasn't a celebrity.” He looked exasperated and said in a loud voice the other man's name LARRY!!! I shared that Larry was actually a friend of mine from Vancouver. That blew him away that I knew who Larry was. We had a big laugh about that and would refer to that moment many times in our friendship.

The world has lost a good person who will be missed by a lot of people. Personally, I know one person who will be happy. That person is my father who also worked for our company for almost 20 years and loved Key. I'm sure they are telling each other jokes now reminiscing about old times.

Connie
My band had worked for Key in a few of his hotel accounts, but I didn’t really know him until we were brought together in Orlando. By the end of 1987, Terry Creighton, then our assistant, had set up our new office (some of you remember that little space in the Discount Music Building) and the three of us went to work creating our corporate events division. Key’s eagerness to introduce himself and us to the Orlando community along with his skill at socializing helped grow the division quickly.

Key was fatherly and always teaching, sharing his knowledge of the entertainment industry, as well as mentoring me with helpful personal advice. He always called me ‘Gypsy’ because of the bright clothes and costumes I had from my days as a night club singer. Eventually, I (mostly) packed away the costumes and invested in traditional corporate attire.😉 Key was always on the move, and you never knew when you’d run into him (including the dentist office). My husband Frank Sleeman builds sets for events, stage and television shows and for years he seemed to run into Key on every production.

Many years ago, I gave Key a vintage slot machine that my parents had owned, and he’d admired in our home. You may have seen it next to his piano in his Growing Bolder interview. It makes me smile to know he enjoyed it.

Key, thank you for leaving so many wonderful memories!

We've lost track of the how many beach parties we've done over the years and last week's party in the Bahamas was one of the most fun! Attendees love a great true nighttime beach party. Event professionals know that's its not always the easiest event to pull off. This client used great event partners all around and it was a success for everyone! AJR and Baha Men had more than enough energy to keep the crowd's attention. Check it out.
