Hunger Street Tacos (): 👍🏽

We’ve lived in Orlando for 7 years. Reluctantly. Another tale for another day. In any case, 7 years ago, the Orlando food scene was on the verge of burgeoning. The verge of the verge. We were hopeful but underwhelmed.

Being a certified food weirdo (my credentials include getting high with line cooks, jalapeno eating contests with Mexican dishwashers, and oft stealing veal demi from walk-ins), I decided to document the culinary minefield here. That documentation found form in OrlandoEats.com and was fed by a merry band of local, gluttonous pranksters. Then covid. Then nunca. Whateves.

One of the first places we fell in love with was Hunger Street Tacos. Love-love. It showed us that we might just be able to eat well in this town. OG. We’re still here, so is HST, as well as a raft of new, gifted taco kitchens. But, with all due respect to the excellent Over the Border, et al, HST remains the best of the best.

So, our most recent meal deal:

🌮 The tortillas are still – easily – Orlando’s maizey gold standard. Wanna fight about it?

🍖 The rib taco – the squeeze and pull – never goes unordered or unenjoyed.

🗡️ We had not yet tried the ‘new’ birria machete. Check. Gold.

🌼 The squash blossom quesadilla, long a staple - still incomparable.

🥑 Guacamole tastes like distillate of avo and sunshine.

Critiques?

Get a liquor license. Wine margaritas suck and beer takes up belly space best occupied by tacos.

Can we please air condition Orlando? Summer noshing afuera here requires sedation. See critique #1. Icy ranch water, please.
