And we love sharing the homestead and history with our guests. Our welcome packet includes a history of the farm:
History of Overlook Farm:
123 acre Overlook Farm was purchased in 1928 for $3500 by Charles and Etta Barnes. It was originally purchased to be used as a wood lot because Charles ran multiple saw mills. Due to the depression, Charles and Etta decided to live in one of the three houses on the farm. They gave each of their daughters, Bertha and Bun a house on the property. Their son, Charlie, his wife, Cora and their 10 children lived in the farmhouse with Charles and Etta. Charles and Etta utilized the farmland for vegetable crops to help support the family.
In 1962, Charles and Etta turned the farm over to Charles and Cora.
In 1967, Charles and Cora turned the farm over to son, William Barnes and his wife, Gloria. . William used the farm for beef cattle and race horses. The ⅓ mile race track you still see circling the outbuildings was used to train the race horses
In 2009, William turned the farm over to his son, Shawn. Shawn opened the breakfast restaurant on the farm in 2007 and has continued many renovations and clean up projects on the property. The farm is still used as a working farm for its hay crop.
