Please help us welcome pianist Dr. Xiao Liang to the UVA Wise Division of Music! Dr. Liang will be our Adjunct Instructor of Piano and Collaborative Pianist this year, which is a critical role for our operations. She will rehearse and perform regularly with our students, faculty, and vocal ensembles in a variety of settings. More details about her career to this point can be found in her bio below.

Welcome to UVA Wise, Dr. Liang!

Xiao Liang is a pianist whose performance, teaching, and research activities span the United States, Italy, Finland, Malaysia, and China. She has earned recognition at numerous competitions, including First Prize in the 2024 FSU Annual Competition, Best Etude Award at the USCI Young Artist International Piano Festival, First Prize at Italy’s Maccagno Young Artist Piano Festival, Gold Award at the AACE New York International Music Competition, and Excellent Award at China’s CCTV Piano and Violin Competition.

A versatile artist, Liang performs as a soloist, collaborative pianist, and chamber musician. In 2021, she was invited to produce MIDI piano accompaniments of Chinese art songs for the 4D Music Pocket Player app, independently performing and editing each track. Her work is now permanently featured in the app’s international library, blending expressive artistry with digital innovation.

Liang’s research explores cross-cultural repertoire, performance anxiety, and inclusive pedagogy. She has presented at NCKP, MTNA, ISME, FSMTA, the MTNA Symposium, and CMS, addressing topics such as small-handed technique, inclusive teaching, and expanding the piano canon to include non-Western and contemporary works.

She holds a B.A. in Musicology from Beijing Normal University under Lanlan Guo, an M.M. in piano performance from the University of Florida under Jasmin Arakawa, and a Performance Diploma from Indiana University with Emile Naoumoff (the last protégé of Nadia Boulanger). She recently received her D.M. in Piano Performance at Florida State University, studying with Read Gainsford and a specialization in Piano Pedagogy under Diana Dumlavwalla.

Dr. Aaron K. Campbell is a multi-award-winning euphonium soloist, low brass specialist, and educator. He currently serves as Instructor of Music and Director of Bands at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, where he leads ensembles including the Highland Cavalier Marching Band, teaches applied low brass, and offers coursework in music education.

Dr. Campbell is the founder, President, and Executive Director of Tampa Brass Works, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to the performance and education of British brass band music. He previously served as the solo euphonium of the Tampa Brass Band, Director of the Sunshine Brass Band, and Founding Director of the Tampa Youth Brass Band—initiatives that continue to enrich the brass band community throughout the Tampa Bay region.

As a soloist and chamber musician, Dr. Campbell has appeared with numerous brass and wind ensembles across the United States and has presented international recitals in both Canada and Japan. His debut solo album, For Those That Wander, showcases newly commissioned works for euphonium and piano, further expanding the instrument's repertoire. He has performed and presented at major conferences and conventions, including the National Convention of Kappa Kappa Psi, multiple regional Tuba Euphonium Conferences, and various music education symposiums. His performance excellence has been recognized at the North American Brass Band Championships, where he won first place in both the Euphonium/Baritone Slow Melody (2022) and Technical (2023) solo competitions.

An active clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Campbell has served in prestigious roles such as adjudicator for the inaugural Great Canadian Brass Band Festival, marching band competitions, and various solo competitions for tuba and euphonium. He maintains a robust private studio comprising brass students of varying levels and backgrounds and is frequently invited to present clinics, masterclasses, and lectures on topics including brass pedagogy, performance technique, musical entrepreneurship, and developing non-traditional career paths in the arts.

Dr. Campbell is also active in media and public engagement initiatives. His YouTube channel, AKCEuph, provides educational resources, performance content, and product reviews for brass players worldwide. He is the co-host and producer of New World BrassCast, a podcast focused on the evolving brass band scene in North America. His work as a journalist and interviewer includes coverage of the 2023 North American Brass Band Association (NABBA) Championships.

Dr. Campbell is a Besson Performing Artist, performing exclusively on a Besson BE 2052 euphonium. He is also an endorsed artist with Denis Wick and LefreQue. He earned the Doctor of Musical Arts in Euphonium Performance from the University of Florida—the first to do so from the institution—alongside a Master of Music from James Madison University and a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of South Florida. The thirty-two piano sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven are universally recognized as monumental masterpieces, for they are not only central to every pianist’s repertoire, but also integral to the history of Western music. In an all-Beethoven program featuring five of his sonatas, pianist Ryan Fogg will showcase the evolution of the composer's unmistakably individualistic style. Dr. Fogg will perform on Thursday, Sept. 12th at 7 p.m. in Cantrell Hall at UVA Wise. The concert is free and open to all. For more information and to make reservations, please visit proartva.org.

Dr. Fogg is Professor of Music and Director of Keyboard Studies at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee, where he teaches a wide range of courses, including applied piano, piano literature, piano ensemble, theory, and ear training.

The concert is brought to you in conjunction with the Clinch Valley Concert Series. UVA Wise Music ❤️
