I am back in the thick of dividing dahlias, Scaur Swinton is such a beautiful dahlia. This color of pink can be hard for me, but I loved this dahlia in the field last year.

I will be having a dahlia tuber sale in March! In the meantime you can buy our rooted cuttings right now on our website. I love rooted cuttings and have had great results with tuber counts from them as well.

I have a big announcement coming soon for all the locals so stay tuned!

What dahlia blooms early and often, had long thin stems perfect for floral arrangements, produces good dahlia seed heads and yields a dozen or so tubers from one clump? The answer is this beauty, Wine Eyed Jill.

If you’d like to give this dahlia a try, I highly recommend it. The coloring in this dahlia blends beautifully in bouquets and the bloom size is perfect. Rooted cuttings are available for purchase now on our website, and tubers will be available in March.

What’s your top performing dahlia that checks all the boxes?

One clump of dahlia tubers from rooted cutting, Peanut Brittle dahlia produced 12 sellable dahlia tubers. 👏👏 Not every dahlia variety produces so many tubers from rooted cuttings, but Peanut Brittle is an all-star! The biggest downside to planting rooted cuttings is lower tuber yield, but I am finding it depends on variety. So far my lowest tuber yield from rooted cutting planted dahlias is GW Calhoun’s Moon. The eyes were very hard to see, so I divided each clump into 3-4 smaller clumps and will wait to see if the eyes develop better. I will put these in vermiculite in a warmer storage area so the eyes develop and then divide.

Picture 1. Peanut Brittle dahlia

Picture 2. 12 tubers from one clump, I also got 9 more “uglies” or “questionables” the uglies are the one I plant, the questionables are the ones I think have eyes, but not 100% sure.

Picture 3. Damaged tuber

Picture 4. An experimental first aid tape job on the damaged tuber. I like to experiment and see what can be done to save tubers. I also super glued one!

If you want to purchase our Peanut Brittle (pictured) rooted cuttings or any other rooted cuttings from us, they are available now on our website.

Let me know if you have any rooted cuttings questions!

Have you always thought that you only get 2-3 tubers with eyes from cutting grown dahlias? (If you don’t know what I mean by cuttings grown dahlias, dahlias are usually grown from tubers, but can also be grown from rooted cuttings usually taken from the new shoots of potted up tubers grown indoors in the winter months expressly for this purpose). I have been busy diving tubers and have found this is definitely not true. I grew a lot of cutting grown dahlias last year and as an example the cutting grown clump I just divided from the pictured dahlia, Coralie, gave me 10 sellable tubers, plus about 5 “uglies” or non-sellable tubers. Pretty amazing right? Every variety is different, but overall I am averaging well above 2-3 tubers from my cutting grown clumps.

Cuttings are a great way to increase your dahlia stock, right now I have rooted cuttings available for sale ion my website, tubers will be coming late February or early March.

I would love to hear your experience with rooted cuttings, how many tubers are you getting from your clumps?

The clumps of dahlias are looking beautiful. This is the size we are getting from 95% of the cutting grown clumps. Every so often there is a smaller one. I have enjoyed digging as the soil is so beautiful. It has come far in the 4 years that we’ve grown here. It started out very dusty and compacted, with no earthworms to be found on the entire property. There was a hard pan that didn’t allow for drainage and digging was difficult due to compaction. Now, after years of adding compost and other organic matter, the soil is a delight to work in. If you have poor soil, keep adding compost and organic matter. We use a flail mower to grind up crops on the soil and the other thing we did to break up the hard pan is use a ripper to open up the soil. It rips down 18” deep into the soil and helped open up to allow drainage and get oxygen to the roots. Do you geek out over soil like I do? I may enjoy the beautiful looking soil more than the crops it produces! 🤓

Half the dahlias are dug. Despite the work or maybe because of it, it is one of my favorite times of the year. Growing up in a farm family, fall was always harvest time. I love that that continues for me. It is so satisfying to pull a clump of dahlias out of the ground and see how one tuber or cutting multiplied over the season. I planted over half of the dahlias as cuttings and the clumps are generous from them, bigger than the tuber planted dahlias in most cases. It will be interesting to see what the tuber yield is from the cutting clumps. I have dahlia cuttings for sale my website right now from all the dahlias I grew this year. In many ways I think they are easier than tubers to grow. Since they already have a root system and vegetative growth you know they are viable when you plant them in the ground and with steady moisture after planting, you should have no problems. You just don’t want to let them dry out for too long like any new baby plant or you risk them dying. Have you grown dahlias from cuttings before? The only downside of cuttings in my opinion is if you are a flower farmer who plans to sell your tubers for income, you typically will not get as many tubers with eyes from a cutting grown dahlia. However, they will usually bloom earlier and the plant is just as big and floriferous as a tuber grown dahlia. This dahlia is one of my favorites, Orange Globe. I believe I paid $25 for the tuber which at the time was a lot! But she’s worth it. She has a big smoky orange bloom that is so gorgeous! She is available for purchase as a cutting right now on my website and I will also have tubers for sale in March.

Hi flower friends! It’s been a long break - I know. If you noticed I was absent you may have wondered if I dropped off the face of the earth. As you know farming is a roller coaster, and this past year hit harder than expected. Between a tough dahlia season, balancing life as a mom of 9, but really the 5 youngest (all boys mind you- that are still at home 💪🏻/🤪), my oldest daughter’s wedding, did I mention a very busy two year old boy who needs his mama, and why not throw in a new one, peri-menopause- whew yes I went there because the emotions that came with it are throwing me for a loop!

You could call it burnout- but I really just needed a break, and time to refocus. I said I was done with flowers, and I was. But now that’s school is back in session, I realized flowers are still my happy place. I have reprioritized and restructured my business and feeling more centered and taking it slower than I was previously.

In the coming weeks I will share more about what’s happening around here - especially in the dahlias- but for now, it’s good to be back! Can’t wait to reconnect with you all! 💐let me know in the comments section how your gardens are doing this season- I’d love to hear from you!

Oh and this beauty pictures Camano Zoe, isn’t she great?

A portrait of spring. After walking the property yesterday, gathering a sampling of what is blooming right now, a big rain storm moved in ending with hail. It was kind of cozy feeling, I was at the dining room table with the boys gathered around and from seemingly out of nowhere the rain barreled in. Many times when it rains here in the PNW it is a soft rain that falls straight down. This was a heavy rain with huge rain drops coming down sideways in a downpour, followed with hail. It was reminiscent of the storms in the Midwest that I grew up with. And just like that it moved on and all was calm again. But today, in the daylight, I will go and see how the flowers fared feeling glad I picked what I did before the storm. Hopefully today I will also have time to make a spring arrangement with the bounty from yesterday. You never know what curveball Mother Nature will throw, it’s best to make hay while the sun shines! Are the bulbs blooming where you are?

Behind the scenes we are busy preparing for shipping. It can be a stressful time, but what I love is how my 3 boys are helping sticker the bags, putting tubers and peat moss in each bag, and loading the crates back up with the prepared bags. This is my why, I grew up on a farm and cherish the memories of doing chores with my siblings, it’s something I’ve always been thankful for. Last night when my son asked do we get to help with packing boxes next, that was a win for me. Despite the stress of having to refund some tubers due to loss in storage, knowing some people will end up disappointed (and I will too because I want to please people, not disappoint), I choose to focus on the experience of raising kids and teaching them how to be a part of something bigger. Creating memories that will last a lifetime. Something I’ve learned recently is to ask myself, what would my future self (20 years from now) value in this situation? And I’ve learned the stresses and the troubles won’t matter in 20 years, but the time with the kids and family will. Try asking yourself that question, it really puts things into perspective!

I dream of the dahlia fields this summer as I work on increasing our stock through cuttings. It is a process I really enjoy, there is something about new plant life that fulfills me. It is a miracle to take a cutting stick it in a rooting cube and watch the roots grow and develop over the course of a few weeks. We are transitioning to dahlias as our main focus, and it feels good. Our secondary crop is bearded iris. And finally a good selection of perennials already in the ground. My goal is to grow large amounts of the dahlias and cuttings that everyone wants to help ease up on dahlias wars. There is nothing more disappointing than going to a website and seeing everything but one or two varieties sold out - am I right? We actually have a lot of beautiful varieties in stock on our website, and we are focusing on adding more for you. That what drives me as we work on this new project. We want to make dahlia sales fun and rewarding for everyone. I think this dahlia is Clearview Peachy, isn’t she a beauty? I would love to hear your most wanted dahlia varieties, tell me in the comments below! 👇🏻
