We took the day and started prepping our garden for digging. We cut down 4 of the 12 rows. We will start lifting tubers soon!
Why do we cut down the dahlias? With so many plants, we typically do not wait for frost to kill the plants. If we would continue to wait for frost, we may go from frost to winter really fast. So we cut down our early planted rows that have been in the ground for 150 days. We leave 5 or 6 inches of stalk for us to attach the variety tag to and let them sit for maybe a week before we dig, wash and then divide.
We do still continue to make flowers that are available in the cooler in our garage. If the front door is open, the cooler is self serve. If the door is closed, we are sold out. The flower garden in our yard is not for picking your own flowers. While we love the interest and support, we spend a massive amount of time making sure the plants are labeled correctly. The more people walking through the garden, the greater the chance a tag may be misplaced.
Once we get to digging, we will post more information with pictures and videos on what we do and what works for us. Make sure to follow our page to keep up to date!
