Herbert E. Berg Florist Inc began in business in 1935 by Mr. Herbert Elmer Berg while he was an agricultural student at North High School, Worcester, Ma. He started his business during the depression growing plants in his greenhouses outside his family home. He left his business to serve his country during WWII and was a rear gunner on the Curtis Helldiver serving in the South Pacific. He came back from the war and continued his business until I meet him in August of 1985 . Mr Berg or “Harky” as his many close friends would call him was looking for someone to take over his business. I was a new graduate of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture and UMass Amherst with a Plant and Soil Science degree. I was looking to have a floral business of my own and have been here for the past 33 years.
This past year I entered a national floral competition, the FTD America’s Cup, and submitted photos of previous work I have done for Flora in Winter at the Worcester Art Museum, Hanover Theater, the Newport Flower Show and wedding work I had created this past summer. I was quite pleased to hear that I was chosen top ten floral competitors nation wide to compete in Washington DC over the 4th of July with the prize of competing in the World Cup 2019 in Philadelphia. I had entered numerous competitions in the 80’s and 90’s with this goal in mind. 1989 I was chosen to compete in Tokyo, Japan for the JFTD World Congress and my last try for the FTD America’s Cup was in 1996 in New Jersey.
We at Herbert E. Berg Florist are constantly studying and keeping up with new trends. My team is very experienced and educated in all aspects of floral design. Myself Sally Jablonski, Michelle Lowell, Sandy Michalak and Art Lupien have about 150 years experience in the floral industry. For us it is “Not just a business, but a way of life” and we would love to help you with your flowers for your life events.
