The term “passionate” has less impact now that it is trendy to be “passionate” about what you are doing. I can’t find a better word to describe my love affair with flowers. It began a long, long time ago, in a far away place called New Jersey. When visitng from France my beloved Grandmother would go for walks with me and we always admired the flowers in people’s front gardens. We admired pansies, tulips, hydrangeas, azaleas, snapdragons, lilies of the valley, roses, daisies, and so many more flowers, in colors that spoke to me in a universal language.
Over fifty years later,I still never tire of them. When it is time to pick up flowers from a wholesaler and then unpack boxes filled with splendor, I still get a thrill. When a new variety or new color of an established variety of bloom is introduced, my reaction is always the same - I am amazed and filled with awe.
Spring and summer are the months of abundance. There are always new flowers to enjoy in my garden, at the local farmer’s market or in other gardens all around town. I fall in love again and again with the way their buds grow in, get plump and then pop open when no one is looking. Their fragrance adds yet another layer of pleasure. When I am creating bouquets for a wedding or event I might feel tired after a long day of working with the flowers, but I never get weary. How can I? The flowers give me so much joy.
Now I am the grandmother. My sweet granddaughter and I go for walks to enjoy the flowers in my neighbor’s front yards. Sofia knows the names of many types of flowers and she and I share the passion of watching them grow, cutting some and bringing them in to enjoy them in a jar of water placed on the kitchen table. Something so simple can be the source of intense pleasure.
