CULPRIT BEHIND COLONY COLLAPSE: Harvard researchers have just pointed to neonics - a highly toxic pesticide - as one of the main culprits behind honeybee colony collapse. But why are these pesticides so harmful? Check out the infographic to find out >> http://ow.ly/x23Xy

Please SPREAD this post to help counter the misleading info that Bayer and other chemical companies are spreading claiming that neonics are safe for bees and that mites are to blame. They even have a website up called "Bayer Bee Care" that greenwashes the entire issue and portrays the industry as caring stewards of bees...

TELL US >> Do you believe that neonics pose no threat to bees?

I planted onions and leeks this week and a few have already begun to sprout. :) They must be as eager for spring as I am.

I have moved my bees outside and they are all looking very good. Lots of brood and plenty of young bees to start storing honey. Who wants some?!

One of these could come in handy sometimes.

Picked up a new hive last weekend from an old hollow tree. It was nice to see how they build their homes in nature. The hive is doing well in their new home... which is just outside of mine now. : )

Like honey? The NDSU Extension Service will be holding a beginner beekeeping class on Oct. 6 (Pre-register by Sept. 30). Beekeeping is a lot of fun and easier than you may think. There is no fee for the class, so even if you do practice beekeeping, you may be able to learn about the intriguing culture of bees.

Ahh! The sweet sound on sweet honey dripping from the comb. ...Drip drip drip!

I checked the bees tonight and was happy to see that all of the hives that were without queens have successfully "re-queened". The bad news is that they may not have any extra honey for the rest of us for this year. I will have a very limited amount this year.

This week at the market I will have plenty of cabbage and cauliflower.

I just started my first batch of sauerkraut ever. I am excited! It is also time to rack my strawberry wine and start a batch of rhubarb wine.

08/02/2011

** Good news! Some of the hives have requeened themselves. Hopefully they are stronger than the last ones. : )

This is a nice video about making sauerkraut. There is a series that walks through the whole process.

My bees are not doing so well. Many of the hives have lost their queens so they inevitably doomed. My fear is that they are all sick. I may not have any honey this year at this rate.

Been very busy getting the market ready to take off! Is anyone willing to help me catch up on my garden or to help clean up the big mess that the storm on Sunday left behind?

I had a bee hive swarm on me today. So now I have 5 hives plus two halves. Bee either by leaving for a new home or by reproduction - they make a new queen which will mate and take half of the bees from the hive. I was able to retrieve them but had to chop down a limb of one of my trees in order to get them. This was the first time I had experienced a swarming hive. I was suprised how docile they were.
