โ๏ธ Last week, we shared the story behind one of Historic Yorktownโs most iconic structuresโthe Moore House. This week, weโre shifting the spotlight to another notable (and slightly newer) landmark: Riverwalk Landing! โ๏ธ
๐ง York County completed construction of Riverwalk Landing in 2005.
๐ฝ๏ธ The venue boasts 9๏ธโฃ unique buildings with over 21,000 sq. ft. of restaurant space, performance areas, a parking terrace, and piers.
๐ The grand opening in May 2005 was a ๐ฆsplashy๐ฆ three-day celebration, complete with visits from dignitaries like former Senator George Allen.
๐ฟ The โfab fourโ of the American RevolutionโGeorge Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette, Lieutenant General Rochambeau, and Admiral de Grasseโstand watch in the heart of this vibrant shopping and dining hub.
๐ LOVE came to the waterfront in 2021 when the iconic LOVE letters were permanently installed near the Yorktown Freight Shed.
๐ต York County will host a 20th Anniversary Celebration for Riverwalk Landing on Thursday, May 22, 2025, with an evening packed full of food, fun, and free music!

โ๏ธ At the end of Moore House Lane in Yorktown sits a white house with a gambrel roof. Driving by, it may seem like a typical Southern home, but in reality, it played a pivotal role in American history when it served as the location for the surrender negotiations at the end of the Revolutionary War. In todayโs Yorktown history lesson, weโll take a closer look at this iconic structure. โ๏ธ
๐ก The Moore House sits on land originally owned be Nicolas Martiau, the great-great-great-grandfather of George Washington. ๐ After passing through several hands, Reverend Peter Temple acquired the home, but he sold it to merchant Augustine Moore on February 20, 1769. That is when it became known as the Moore House at Temple Farm.
๐ก There were numerous rumors that Moore was related to Governor Spotswood, the colonial governor of Virginia; however, historians have not been able to prove this myth.
๐ก After the Revolutionary War, life passed quietly at the home until the 1860s when the bloodshed of the Civil War arrived at its doors. Union soldiers took possession of the house and used its drapes, furniture, doors, and shutters as firewood. Sadly, the home was forgotten and left in disrepair until 1881. ๐
๐ก Weโll take a closer look at the restoration process in the next couple of weeks. Until then, be sure to stop by to see this important piece of American history during your next visit to Historic Yorktown!

Nestled beside the York River sits one of Virginiaโs best kept secrets. Yorktown is known for its historyโbut youโll also find fresh seafood, specialty shops, and romantic sails! Whether you book a modern hotel room or choose a quaint bed and breakfast, you will find yourself within walking distance of beautiful, sandy beaches and a charming waterfront village called Riverwalk Landing. It includes several different restaurants, specialty boutiques, museums, and outdoor recreational fun.
Yorktown is a must-see for anyone who wishes to fully understand the story of our Nationโs birth. Travel back to October of 1781 and tour the home where the commander of the Virginia militia negotiated terms of surrender that effectively ended the Revolutionary War. The original brick walls of the Nelson Home still bear the scars of cannonballs fired during that final clash at Yorktown. Explore the battlefields and walk in the footsteps of our FoundersโAmerican heroes such as George Washington and Alexander Hamilton. Pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives to ensure our independence at the Yorktown Victory Monumentโa statue first commissioned at the end of the war and completed almost a century later in the late 1800s. Take a short trolley ride down the road to the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown which offers a comprehensive look at the struggles and victories from the twilight of the colonial period to the dawn of the Constitution.
And as you reflect on the events that led to the creation of our Nation, step back into the 21st century where art galleries, locally owned shops, and culinary temptations await.
Whether itโs oysters, tuna, or softshell crabs you craveโfresh seafood is always on the menu at Yorktown Pub, Umi Sushi, and Riverwalk Restaurant!
Choose from brick oven pizzas, gourmet burgers, and more than two dozen local craft beers when you dine at Water Street Grille. Carrot Tree Kitchens is known for its scratch made cakes, and southern favorites like Brunswick Stew and Ham Biscuits. Satisfy your sweet tooth with decadent frozen treats from Ben & Jerryโs. Subs, sandwiches, pizzas, and hard lemonade are available at Larryโs.
From late spring through November, the Schooner Alliance promises to make your trip even more memorable. Spend a romantic evening scanning the horizon for dolphins during a sunset sail or team up with a band of marauders one summer day when you embark on a Pirate Adventure Cruise with the kids. Rent a bicycle to take a relaxing ride down the Riverwalk. Or hop on a Segway for a guided tour that includes some lesser-known (but equally memorable) moments in history, and beautiful backdrops for snapping pictures. When it comes to exploring the townโthe possibilities are endless!
