โ๏ธ ๐ช๐๐๐๐! ๐ช๐๐๐๐! ๐ช๐๐๐๐! Todayโs Yorktown history lesson is about one of our favorite local attractions -- the ๐ฌ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐๐ผ๐๐ป ๐ง๐ฟ๐ผ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐! Itโs the best way to see the village, and its history is just as fun and fascinating! โ๏ธ
๐ Trolleys first appeared in the United States in the late 1880s. They had been in London and other European cities long before that, but it wasnโt until the suburbs of major metropolitan areas began developing that they became popular in America. Residents in the suburbs of New York City and Washington, D.C., used the convenient mode of transportation to travel to and from work.
๐ In later years, trolleys found their way to the big screen and Broadway appearing in popular movies and shows such as the Christmas classic
The first Yorktown Trolley was introduced in 1999. During its first year, 13,000 riders traveled aboard. Today, more than 95,000 passengers utilize the Trolleys each year to travel to the various historical sites. ๐ฎ
๐ The Yorktown Trolleys are specially-made in Wisconsin, ADA-accessible, and feature a number of enhancements such as onboard infotainment and custom interiors.
๐ This holiday season, youโll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy this local favorite. It was quite a par-tea at Riverwalk Landing today as local school children held mock tea parties of their own aboard the Colonial Seaport Foundationโs โ๐๐๐ถ. After visiting a series of living history stations throughout Yorktown, the students had to decide if they would remain loyal to the crown or rebel with the colonists. These brave patriots voted for the latter. Huzzah!

โ๏ธ The Swan Tavern is one of the most iconic structures on Historic Main Street. In todayโs Yorktown history lesson, letโs take a look at what life in an 18th-century tavern was like!โ๏ธ
๐บ The taproom was on the first floor and offered whiskey, brandy, rum, ale, and ciders. During the winter months, the bar staff usually offered toddies, hot rum drinks, and spiced wine. Guests often dined together at a communal table on venison, oysters, bear, fish, and crabs. Fresh vegetables from the tavern garden were also served.
๐ป Breakfast was typically at 7:30 a.m. with lunch served around 2 p.m. or earlier. At 6 p.m., guests enjoyed dinner and then retired for drinks, conversation, or rest.
Before guests could stay overnight in one of the sleeping rooms, they first had to enjoy a drink or twoโฆor threeโฆwith the barkeeper to make sure they were trustworthy. It was not uncommon for a traveler to have to share a room with four to eight complete strangers.
๐บYou can visit the inside of the Swan Tavern on several special event weekends throughout the year. It will be open next from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 8.
๐ป We say, โThree cheers to that!โ ๐ป
